It follows four stages: a five-minute walkaround, five minutes in the cabin before you move, fifteen minutes on roads you actually use, and five minutes after you park. The 30 checks below fit into that window and work for new, demo, and pre-owned cars from BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Volvo, Land Rover, and the rest.

The usual showroom drive is a ten-minute loop on a smooth road with a salesperson talking you through the ambient lighting. You learn almost nothing from it. On a car that costs Rs 60 lakh or more, insist on your own route and enough time to cover it. Autocar India advises asking for at least an hour and walking away from a dealer who refuses. Thirty well-used minutes is the minimum.

Before you go: get the right car on the right roads

Two things decide whether a test drive is worth anything. First, the car must be the variant you plan to buy, with the same engine, gearbox and suspension. An M Sport car on 20-inch wheels rides nothing like a base car on 18s. Second, the route must include the roads you drive every day: a stretch of stop-and-go traffic, a few speed breakers, a broken patch, and somewhere you can reach 80 to 100kph. If the dealer can bring the car to your home, do the drive from there, which also tells you whether it fits your building’s ramp.

For a pre-owned car, ask the seller not to start the engine before you arrive. A cold start tells you more than anything else in the first minute.

Minutes 0 to 5: the walkaround

Confirm the variant. Check the badge, wheel size, and the brochure spec against the car you’d buy. Optional air suspension or larger wheels change the ride completely.

Read the tyres. Look for even tread wear across the width. The four-digit code on the sidewall gives the week and year of manufacture, so “2324” means week 23 of 2024. Uneven wear on a pre-owned car points to alignment or suspension problems. Note whether the car runs on run-flat tyres, because they ride firmer and cost more to replace.

Check panel gaps and paint. Stand at each corner in daylight and look along the body. Uneven gaps, ripples or a panel that’s a slightly different shade usually mean accident repair on a used car.

Open and close every door, the boot and the bonnet. Listen for a solid close. Check the door seals, since good sealing keeps dust out, which matters on Indian roads.

Test the lights. Headlamps, DRLs, indicators, fog lamps and any adaptive or matrix function. LED and laser units are expensive to replace out of warranty.

Check ground clearance against your life. Look at the front lip and the underbody. If the car has air suspension, confirm it sits level and that the lift mode works, because you will need it for speed breakers and steep driveways.

Look at the glass. Check the windscreen for chips, especially in the area the head-up display or ADAS camera uses. A replacement windscreen on these cars often needs camera recalibration.

Minutes 5 to 10: inside, before you move

Set the driving position. You should reach the pedals and wheel comfortably with good thigh support. Team-BHP’s guide suggests checking whether the steering wheel touches your legs, which tall drivers often find.

Check visibility. Thick A-pillars and small rear windows are common on coupe-style SUVs. Look at the quality of the 360-degree camera, not just whether it exists.

Sit in the back, behind your own driving position. For a chauffeur-driven car this is the most important seat. Check legroom, under-thigh support, recline, rear AC vents and whether the middle seat is usable.

Start the AC on full. Note how quickly the cabin cools, front and rear. A car parked in the sun is the real test in an Indian summer.

Pair your phone. Connect Apple CarPlay or Android Auto and time it. If it takes the salesperson three attempts, it will take you three attempts every morning.

Try one everyday task on the screen. Change the fan speed or switch off the lane-keep assist. Count the taps. Some touch-heavy cabins hide basic controls in menus.

Watch the warning lights at start-up. Every light on the cluster should go out within seconds. On a pre-owned car, any warning that stays on is a reason to stop and ask.

Listen to the cold start. The idle should settle quickly with no rattles, ticking or vibration through the seat and steering.

Minutes 10 to 25: the drive

Crawl in traffic. Stop-and-go driving shows how smooth the gearbox is at low speed. Watch for jerks, hesitation when pulling away, or a clunk when it shifts.

Take speed breakers at different speeds. Listen for knocks from the suspension and any scraping underneath.

Ride in the back on a broken road. Team-BHP’s guide notes ride comfort can differ noticeably between the front and rear seats. If someone else is with you, swap and let them drive for a few minutes.

Brake firmly once, on a clear road. The car should stop straight. A pulsing pedal or steering shudder on a used car usually means warped discs.

Check the steering. It should be light enough for parking, then weight up at speed. On a straight road, the car should not pull to one side.

Listen at 80 to 100kph. Tyre roar and wind noise around the mirrors are what you will live with on every highway drive. You should be able to talk at a normal volume.

Overtake. From 60kph, floor the throttle and see how quickly the gearbox kicks down and how strongly the car pulls.

Try the driver assists. Adaptive cruise and lane-keep can behave unpredictably on Indian roads with poor markings. Check what they do, and check how easily you can switch them off.

Park it. Do a U-turn to judge the turning circle, then reverse into a tight spot using the sensors and cameras.

Switch the driving modes. Comfort and Sport should feel clearly different. On a hybrid or EV, try the regeneration levels and see whether one-pedal driving suits you.

Minutes 25 to 30: after you stop

Look under the car. On a pre-owned car, check the ground where it stood for oil, coolant, or AC water drips. AC water is normal; anything else isn’t.

Open the bonnet while it’s hot. Look for oil around the engine, and smell for burning.

Do a hot restart. Switch off, wait a minute, and restart. It should fire immediately and idle smoothly.

Check the paperwork (pre-owned and demo). Match the VIN and engine number on the car to the RC. Ask for the insurance policy and brand service records, and check that the odometer reading fits the service history. For a demo car, ask whether it is already registered and in whose name, since that affects the ownership count on your RC.

Write it down immediately. Note what you liked and disliked before you talk to the salesperson. Drive the next car on the same route so the comparison is fair.

A note on pre-owned luxury cars

A test drive tells you how a car drives today. It won’t tell you everything about how it has been looked after. For any pre-owned luxury car, get an independent inspection by a brand-authorised workshop or a specialist you trust before you pay a deposit. Listings on a marketplace such as Motozite connect you to sellers and their cars; the inspection and paperwork check are still yours to arrange.

You can browse pre-owned cars, demo cars and new cars on Motozite, then shortlist two or three to drive back-to-back. Use the compare tool to narrow the list before you book the drives.

FAQ

How long should a luxury car test drive be?

Aim for at least 30 minutes, and longer if the dealer allows it. Autocar India recommends asking for an hour on your usual commute. Ten minutes on a smooth loop near the showroom is not enough to judge ride, noise, gearbox behaviour or the rear seat.

What should I check on a pre-owned luxury car test drive?

Start the car cold, watch for warning lights that stay on, and check tyres, panel gaps and paint for signs of repair. On the drive, listen for suspension knocks over speed breakers and feel for brake shudder. Afterwards, look for drips under the car and match the VIN and engine number to the RC.

Can I test drive a luxury car at home?

Many luxury car dealers in India will bring a car to your home or office for a test drive if you ask. This is worth doing, because you can drive your own route and check whether the car clears your building’s ramp and fits your parking spot.

Should I test drive a car in the rear seat too?

Yes, especially if the car will be chauffeur-driven. Ride comfort in the back can differ noticeably from the front. Spend at least a few minutes in the rear seat on a broken road and check legroom, recline, and the rear AC.

What is the tyre manufacturing date code?

The last four digits of the code on a tyre’s sidewall show the week and year it was made. For example, 2324 means the 23rd week of 2024. Old tyres harden with age even if the tread looks good, which matters on a pre-owned car that has done low kilometres.

Is a demo car a good buy?

A demo car can save money, but check its kilometres, its condition, and its registration status carefully. Ask whether it has already been registered and in whose name, because that can make you a second owner on paper. Test drive it as thoroughly as a pre-owned car, since many people have driven it before you.

A useful luxury car test drive in India takes about 30 minutes.
