Every A4, A6, Q3, Q5 and Q7 sold new after that point is a turbo-petrol, because Audi India dropped diesel entirely at the BS6 switchover. Before it, most of these cars were diesels. That one split decides your running costs, your registration life in Delhi NCR, and which faults you should be hunting for on the test drive.

This guide goes model by model: which years to target, what each engine and gearbox is, what the car cost new, and what to check before you pay.

Why April 2020 splits the used Audi market in two

Audi India entered the BS6 era with petrol cars only. Autocar Pro reported in January 2020 that diesel had historically made up 65 to 70 percent of the brand’s sales, and that the company accepted it would lose some diesel buyers. The 2.0 TDI and 3.0 TDI engines were discontinued with BS6, and the Q5 was off sale for roughly 18 months before returning as a petrol-only car.

What that means for you:

Pre-2020 Audis are mostly diesels. Strong torque, good highway economy, and in most cases older. Expect wear items, emissions hardware and gearbox history to matter more than the badge.

Post-2020 Audis are all 2.0 TFSI or 3.0 TFSI petrols. Simpler emissions hardware, quieter, younger, and the only sensible choice if you live in Delhi NCR and plan to keep the car beyond its tenth birthday.

There is a thin patch in between. Several models were off sale or in short supply around 2020 and 2021, so you will see fewer listings from those years.

Pre-owned Audi models at a glance (petrol era)

Model

Petrol-era India launch

Engine (India spec at launch)

Drive

Launch price, ex-showroom

Current new price, ex-showroom (Oct 2026)

Audi A4

5 Jan 2021 (facelift)

2.0 TFSI, 190hp, 7-speed DCT

Front-wheel drive

Rs 42.34 to 46.67 lakh

Rs 46.88 to 55.83 lakh

Audi A6

24 Oct 2019

2.0 TFSI, 245hp, 370Nm, 7-speed DCT

Front-wheel drive

Rs 54.20 to 59.20 lakh

Rs 64.81 to 71.66 lakh

Audi Q3

30 Aug 2022 (new generation)

2.0 TFSI, 190hp, 320Nm, 7-speed DCT

quattro AWD

Rs 44.89 to 50.39 lakh

Rs 43.67 to 53.00 lakh

Audi Q5

23 Nov 2021 (facelift)

2.0 TFSI, 249hp, 370Nm, 7-speed DCT

quattro AWD

Rs 58.93 to 63.77 lakh

Rs 65.55 to 70.73 lakh

Audi Q7

3 Feb 2022 (facelift)

3.0 V6 TFSI, 340hp, 500Nm, 8-speed auto, adaptive air suspension

quattro AWD

Rs 79.99 to 88.33 lakh

Rs 87.17 to 96.15 lakh

Current prices are from Autocar India’s Audi price listing, last updated 1 October 2026. Launch prices are from launch coverage in Autocar India and Business Standard.

One more pricing detail used-car buyers often miss. After GST 2.0 in September 2025, Audi India cut new-car prices by between Rs 2.6 lakh and more than Rs 7.8 lakh depending on the model (the Q3, for example, went from Rs 46.14 lakh to Rs 43.07 lakh). When new prices fall, the asking prices of nearly new used cars should follow. If a seller is quoting a 2023 or 2024 car against pre-GST-cut new prices, use the current price list in your negotiation.

Used Audi A4: which years to buy and what to check

What you’ll find: pre-2021 A4s, including diesels from older generations and a 150hp 1.4-litre petrol in the pre-facelift model, and the January 2021 facelift onwards with a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol and a 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox driving the front wheels. Autocar India’s current spec sheet lists the engine at 204hp and 320Nm on today’s cars, so later A4s are slightly stronger than the 2021 launch figure.

Our take: the 2021-onward 2.0 TFSI is the A4 to buy. The jump from 150hp to 190hp-plus is the difference between a car that feels adequate and one that feels properly quick on a highway overtake. The older 1.4 petrol is cheaper to buy, but you are paying luxury-car running costs for mainstream-car performance.

What to check on a used A4:

Dual-clutch behaviour from a standstill and in stop-go traffic. Shifts should be clean, with no shudder when creeping forward.

Service history at an authorised Audi workshop, ideally with gearbox service entries where the schedule calls for them.

Front-wheel-drive cars put all their power through the front tyres, so check for uneven front tyre wear and pulling under braking.

MMI screen, cameras and parking sensors. Test every one of them during the inspection, not after the deal.

Used Audi A6: the value pick if you want a big sedan

What you’ll find: the current-generation A6 arrived in India on 24 October 2019 as a petrol-only car, with a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol making 245hp and 370Nm, a 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox and front-wheel drive. The previous generation offered diesel as well as petrol.

Our take: a 2020 to 2023 A6 45 TFSI is one of the most sensible used luxury buys in this list. In our view, big executive sedans are where a second owner gets the most car for the money, because buyers in this price band have been moving to SUVs. The A6’s 530-litre boot and rear seat space make it a genuine chauffeur car. The trade-off is that it is front-wheel drive with 370Nm, so it never feels as planted out of a tight corner as an all-wheel-drive rival.

What to check on a used A6:

Rear-seat condition and rear AC performance. Many A6s are chauffeur-driven, so the back of the cabin tells you more about the car’s life than the odometer.

Check whether the car you are viewing is a Premium Plus or a Technology. The two variants were Rs 5 lakh apart at launch, so make sure you are paying for the one you are actually getting.

Any warning lights on the instrument cluster after a cold start, and a full scan at an Audi workshop before you sign.

Used Audi Q3: the safest entry ticket

What you’ll find: first-generation Q3s with diesel engines, and the second generation from 30 August 2022, which is petrol-only with a 190hp, 320Nm 2.0-litre turbo, a 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox and quattro all-wheel drive as standard.

Our take: if you want your first Audi and you want the least drama, buy a 2022-onward Q3. It is the youngest car in this guide, which means it is the most likely to still carry factory warranty or be eligible for an extended one. Smaller wheels and tyres also keep consumables cheaper than on a Q5 or Q7. In a 2021 Team-BHP thread on buying a used Q5, one member’s mechanic went as far as recommending the Q3 over the Q5 purely on reliability.

What to check on a used Q3:

Confirm the generation. A first-generation Q3 and a second-generation Q3 can look similar in listing photos, but they are very different cars to own.

Check whether the original warranty is still running and whether an extended warranty was bought (more on that below).

Look at the alloy wheels closely. A curbed rim is cheap to spot and expensive to replace.

Used Audi Q5: brilliant to drive, so do your homework

What you’ll find: older diesel Q5s, a gap of roughly 18 months with no Q5 on sale after April 2020, and then the facelift from 23 November 2021 with a 249hp, 370Nm 2.0 TFSI, a 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox and quattro all-wheel drive.

Our take: the 2021-onward Q5 45 TFSI is the best all-rounder in this list if your budget stretches. It has the most performance of the four-cylinder cars and all-wheel drive. Older diesel Q5s are where the cheapest “luxury SUV” listings come from, and they are where the most caution is needed. Team-BHP’s 2021 coverage of a 2013 Q5 offered at about Rs 16 lakh is a good illustration: forum members flagged gearbox history, a possible failing belt, worn rubber and suspension parts at that age, parts lead times of up to a month, and a set of 19-inch tyres costing more than Rs 1 lakh.

What to check on a used Q5:

Confirm the engine. On the 2021 Team-BHP thread, a seller described a car as a 3.0 TDI V6 when the RC showed a four-cylinder, 1,964cc engine. A “30 TDI” badge on the boot is not the same as a 3.0-litre. Match the RC, the VIN and the invoices.

Gearbox servicing on record, especially on older diesels.

For diesels, ask about DPF and injector history. Both came up in owner discussions as potential big-ticket repairs.

Rubber hoses, bushes and suspension components on any car over seven years old, even if the odometer reading is low.

Used Audi Q7: the most car for the money, and the most to inspect

What you’ll find: the earlier diesel Q7 (45 TDI) and, from 3 February 2022, the facelifted petrol-only Q7 with a 3.0-litre turbo-petrol V6 producing 340hp and 500Nm, an 8-speed automatic, quattro all-wheel drive and adaptive air suspension as standard. Audi began local production of the Q7 at the SAVWIPL plant in Aurangabad in 2021.

Our take: a used Q7 gives you seven seats, a V6 and a level of refinement that costs well over Rs 87 lakh new today. The catch is complexity. Air suspension is superb when it works and expensive when it doesn’t, and seven-seat SUVs usually have hard-working lives. Buy one only after a dedicated suspension check, not just a general inspection.

What to check on a used Q7:

Air suspension: leave the car parked overnight and look at the ride height in the morning. A corner that has dropped points to a leak. Then cycle through the height settings and listen to the compressor.

Third-row seat mechanism and condition. It tells you how the car was used.

Brakes and tyres. This is a heavy SUV, and both wear faster than on the smaller Audis.

On a diesel Q7, the Delhi NCR registration question below matters more than on any other car in this list, simply because so many were sold there.

Warranty: what you can still get on a used Audi

Two OEM programmes are worth asking about:

Audi Approved: plus is Audi India’s own pre-owned car programme. According to Audi India’s announcements, cars sold through it go through more than 300 checks covering mechanical, body, interior and electrical systems, plus a road test, and come with a two-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty and 24×7 roadside assistance. Terms can change, so confirm them with the outlet you are buying from. We compared it with BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Volvo’s programmes in our certified pre-owned luxury cars guide.

Audi India’s extended warranty. In August 2025 Audi India announced extended warranty coverage up to 10 years from the car’s original date of sale and up to 2,00,000km, bought in one- or two-year extensions before the existing warranty expires. It also launched a roadside assistance programme for cars up to 15 years old, priced between Rs 3,999 and Rs 8,000. The announcement does not say whether an extended warranty transfers to a second owner, so ask an authorised Audi dealer to confirm the status against the car’s VIN before you buy. A 2022 Q3 with a live extended warranty is a materially different purchase from one without. We covered the announcement in more detail here.

Paperwork traps specific to India

Delhi NCR diesel age limits. Delhi began deregistering diesel vehicles older than 10 years from 1 January 2022, following National Green Tribunal directions, with NOCs issued so that cars can be re-registered elsewhere. A 2017 diesel Q7 on a Delhi registration has roughly a year of life left in the city, however good its condition. Price that in, or buy a petrol.

Engine and variant on the RC. Check the cubic capacity and fuel type on the registration certificate against the car itself.

RC transfer status. One Team-BHP member found the RC had not been transferred from the previous owner even though the car was bought from a dealership. Do not take delivery until the transfer paperwork is clear.

For a full walk-round list that applies to any used luxury car, see our used luxury car inspection checklist.

Which used Audi should you buy?

First Audi, sensible budget: 2022-onward Q3. It is the youngest model in Audi’s core range, uses a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol with a 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox, and is the most likely to still be within factory or extended warranty. Whatever the model, a full service history at an authorised workshop matters more than the badge.

Should I buy a used Audi diesel or petrol in India?

Buy a petrol unless you drive long highway distances and live outside Delhi NCR. Audi India stopped selling diesels in April 2020, so every diesel Audi is now at least six years old, and Delhi deregisters diesel cars older than 10 years. Post-2020 petrol Audis are younger and avoid diesel emissions hardware such as the DPF.

Does Audi India still sell diesel cars?

No. Audi India moved to a petrol-only line-up when BS6 emission norms took effect in April 2020, and the 2.0 TDI and 3.0 TDI diesel engines were discontinued. Any diesel A4, A6, Q3, Q5 or Q7 you see in India today is a pre-owned car from before that change.

Is a used Audi Q7 expensive to maintain?

It is the most expensive of the five to run. The petrol Q7 sold from February 2022 has a 3.0-litre V6, adaptive air suspension as standard, and large wheels and tyres, all of which cost more to service and replace than on a Q3 or A4. Have the air suspension checked separately before buying and keep a repair reserve.

Can I get a warranty on a used Audi in India?

Yes, in two ways. Cars sold through Audi Approved: plus come with Audi’s pre-owned warranty, announced as two years with unlimited kilometres. Separately, Audi India’s extended warranty can run up to 10 years from the car’s original sale date and up to 2,00,000km, but whether it transfers to a new owner should be confirmed with an authorised Audi dealer using the car’s VIN.

What is the difference between the Audi A6 Premium Plus and Technology variants?

The Technology is the higher variant with more equipment, and at the A6’s October 2019 launch it cost Rs 5 lakh more than the Premium Plus (Rs 59.20 lakh versus Rs 54.20 lakh, ex-showroom). On a used car, check the variant on the invoice or with an Audi dealer rather than relying on the listing title.

If you are buying a used Audi in India, the single most useful thing to know is the date April 2020.
