Sources: Autocar India launch reports (2016 and 2021), evo India, Rushlane, Volvo Car India press release.

Why the S90 is no longer on sale in India

Volvo never said much about it. Motoring World reported in June 2025 that Volvo India had quietly removed the S90 from its website, leaving an SUV-only line-up, and Autocar India’s S90 page now lists the car as discontinued. Our reading, not Volvo’s: buyers in this price band have been drifting to SUVs, and in the sedan segment the 5 Series and E-Class both offered more powertrain choice and stronger badge pull.

The S90’s spiritual successor is the ES90, an electric sedan. Volvo has confirmed it for India, but as of 16 October 2026, Autocar India still lists it as upcoming, with an expected price of Rs 1 crore to Rs 1.2 crore as a fully imported car. That is a very different price bracket. For anyone who wants a Volvo sedan at sensible money, the used S90 is now the only route.

What the Volvo S90 gets right

Ride comfort. This is the S90’s strongest card. Autocar India’s December 2021 review of the B5 described a supple, well-damped ride that soaks up bumps and broken patches, and a quiet cabin with little road noise. Team-BHP’s 2016 test of the D4 reached the same conclusion about the ride, praising how the rear air suspension handled bumps without shudder. On Indian roads, that matters more than lap times.

The cabin. Volvo’s minimalist interior has aged better than most of its German rivals’ screens-everywhere designs. Both reviews praised the build and material quality. The 2021 car brought a 9-inch portrait touchscreen running Android with Google services, a 19-speaker, 1400W Bowers & Wilkins sound system, ventilated and massaging front seats, and four-zone climate control.

Safety. The S90 received a five-star Euro NCAP rating in 2017, with the maximum score in the pedestrian emergency-braking test, according to Volvo’s own release. Indian B5 cars got adaptive cruise control with Pilot Assist, lane-keeping aid, blind-spot information with steer assist, cross-traffic alert and a 360-degree camera. In our view, few sedans at this price were as well equipped on safety when new.

Space. Team-BHP found the rear seat generous for two adults and adequate for three, and measured boot space at 500 litres on the 2016 car.

An air purifier that makes sense here. The 2021 car’s Advanced Air Cleaner, with a PM2.5 sensor, sounds like a brochure item until you spend a November evening in Delhi traffic.

Where it falls short

This is not a driver’s car, and Volvo never claimed it was. Autocar India found the B5’s 250hp delivery linear to the point where it rarely felt that powerful, with the real shove arriving only above 5,000rpm. The steering felt slightly disconnected at speed, and body control in corners was not confidence-inspiring. Volvo claims 0-100kph in 6.9 seconds, and top speed is limited to 180kph.

A few more things to live with:

The rear seat cushion. There is plenty of legroom, but Autocar India found the seat base shallow and flat, so it is less comfortable on long trips than the space suggests. If you will be chauffeured, an E-Class is the better rear-seat car.

Too much on the touchscreen. Climate control lives in the screen, and the 2021 car had no paddle shifters and no drive-mode selector.

Ground clearance. Team-BHP measured 152mm on the 2016 car and scraped it once over 120km of mixed roads. Autocar India called the B5’s clearance relatively low and warned that big speed breakers need care with a full load.

The dealer network. Volvo’s network has always been smaller than BMW’s or Mercedes’, and both reviews flagged it. Team-BHP was quoted around 10 working days for non-service parts in 2016. Check how far your nearest Volvo workshop is before you buy.

B5 petrol or D4 diesel: which used S90 to buy

Buy the B5 petrol if you can. It is newer (2021 onwards); it has the updated Android-based infotainment and the full driver-assist suite, and Autocar India found its eight-speed automatic smoother, with fewer hesitations than earlier versions. It also has a longer road ahead of it under Delhi-NCR’s age rules.

The D4 diesel is cheaper, but check where you will register it. It is a good highway car with 400Nm of torque. Team-BHP noted a flat spot around 1,600rpm in its 2016 test car, so drive one in traffic before you decide. The bigger issue is regulatory. Delhi-NCR has barred diesel vehicles older than 10 years since the NGT’s 2014-15 orders. The Supreme Court’s interim orders of August and December 2025 have paused coercive action against BS-IV and newer vehicles while it reviews the blanket age ban, but this is not a final ruling. A 2016 or 2017 S90 D4 is reaching that 10-year mark now. If you live in Delhi-NCR, our advice is simple: skip the early diesels.

Volvo S90 vs BMW 5 Series vs Mercedes E-Class: what the price gap tells you

The S90 was always the value pick of the segment. Here is how its last confirmed price compares with what its rivals cost new today:

Car

Ex-showroom price

Basis

Volvo S90 B5

Rs 66.90 lakh

Volvo Car India, September 2022 (now discontinued)

Audi A6

From Rs 64.81 lakh

Autocar India listing, October 2026

BMW 5 Series LWB (530Li M Sport)

Rs 76.60 lakh

Autocar India listing, October 2026

Mercedes-Benz E-Class LWB

From Rs 81.50 lakh

Autocar India listing, October 2026

The S90 undercut the 5 Series and E-Class when it was new, and today the newest S90 on the road is already a few years old. That is the case for buying one: you get a big, quiet, safe luxury sedan for a good deal less than a new German car. The case against is equally clear. A new 530Li or E-Class gives you a longer wheelbase, newer tech, and a warranty, and both have far wider service networks.

Buying a used Volvo S90 in India: what to check

Rear air suspension. Both the 2016 and 2021 cars use air suspension. Look for a car that sits level after being parked overnight, listen for the compressor running too often, and ask for any suspension work in the service history. Our guide to air suspension problems in luxury cars covers the warning signs and repair costs in detail.

The 48V mild-hybrid system (B5). Ask an authorised Volvo workshop to check for stored faults in the hybrid system and the 12V and 48V batteries.

Software status. The B5’s infotainment and driver-assist systems depend on software. Confirm that updates have been done at an authorised workshop, and test the Google services, the 360-degree camera, and Pilot Assist on the drive.

Service history. A full history from an authorised Volvo workshop matters more on a car with a small network. Verify it against the VIN, not just the stamped book.

The underbody. With 152mm of clearance, scrape marks under the front are common. Check the bumper lip, the sump area and the exhaust.

Whether it qualifies for Volvo Selekt. Volvo’s certified pre-owned programme in India takes cars under five years old with less than 75,000km and a full authorised service history, and adds a 114-point check and at least 12 months of factory warranty, according to Volvo Cars India. In practice, that means only B5 petrol cars are young enough now. If a dealer sells you a Selekt S90, you get Volvo’s warranty. If you buy privately, there is no Volvo warranty unless you buy one, so budget for an independent inspection. Our comparison of certified pre-owned programmes from BMW, Mercedes, Audi and Volvo explains how Selekt stacks up.

Verdict: who should buy a used Volvo S90

Buy a used S90 B5 if you drive yourself, care more about calm and comfort than corner speed, and want a properly safe luxury sedan for less than a new German car. It is genuinely underrated, mainly because the badge doesn’t shout.

Look elsewhere if you are chauffeur-driven (the E-Class is better in the back), if your nearest Volvo workshop is a long drive away, or if you need a diesel registered in Delhi-NCR.

You can browse pre-owned luxury sedans listed on Motozite, or see Volvo’s current new-car line-up if you’d rather go new. If you are open to an SUV, our Volvo XC90 review is the natural next read.

FAQ

Is the Volvo S90 discontinued in India?

Yes. Volvo India removed the S90 from its line-up by June 2025, and Autocar India now lists it as discontinued. Volvo currently sells only SUVs in India. The ES90 electric sedan has been confirmed for India but, as of mid-October 2026, has not yet launched.

Is a used Volvo S90 a good buy?

A used S90 B5 (2021 to 2025) is a good buy if you value ride comfort, cabin quality, and safety over sporty handling. It was cheaper than a BMW 5 Series or Mercedes E-Class when new and is very well equipped. Check the air suspension, service history, and distance to the nearest Volvo workshop before you buy.

Which Volvo S90 engine was sold in India?

From 2016 to 2021, the S90 was sold with the D4, a 2.0-litre diesel making 190hp and 400Nm. From October 2021, it was replaced by the B5, a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol mild hybrid making 250hp and 350Nm. Both used an eight-speed automatic driving the front wheels.

What was the price of the Volvo S90 in India?

The S90 D4 launched in November 2016 at Rs 53.5 lakh ex-showroom. The S90 B5 petrol launched in October 2021 at Rs 61.9 lakh, and Volvo Car India’s September 2022 price list had it at Rs 66.90 lakh ex-showroom.

What is the ground clearance of the Volvo S90?

Team-BHP measured the ground clearance of the 2016 S90 at 152mm, and Autocar India described the 2021 car’s clearance as relatively low. Large speed breakers need care, especially with a full load. Check the underbody of any used S90 for scrape damage.

Volvo S90 or BMW 5 Series: which is better?

The S90 is the more comfortable, calmer car and was cheaper when new. The 5 Series is better to drive, has newer technology, and BMW’s service network in India is much wider. Choose the S90 for a relaxed, safe used sedan; choose the 5 Series if driving enjoyment and a new-car warranty matter more.

You can no longer buy a new Volvo S90 in India.
