If you need seven seats and luggage space at the same time, the Defender 130 leaves the most room behind its third row, at 290 litres. At the other end, the Mercedes S 450e, a Rs 2.20 crore limousine, has a 345-litre boot because its battery sits underneath, which is barely more than the 318 litres in a Rs 41 lakh Volvo EX30. One warning before you use any of these numbers: car makers measure boots in different ways, and the same boot can be quoted 25 percent bigger or smaller depending on the method. Shortlist on the figures, then take your own suitcases to the showroom.

Why boot space figures don’t agree

This is the part most “biggest boot” lists skip, and it is the reason two websites can quote very different numbers for the same car.

Block method vs liquid method. Land Rover is unusually open about this. It quotes two figures for every boot: a “dry” figure measured with standard VDA blocks, and a “wet” figure that simulates filling the boot with liquid, which captures every corner. For the Defender 110 five-seater, that is 786 litres dry and 972 litres wet. Same boot, a 186-litre difference.

To the parcel shelf vs to the roof. Volvo India quotes the XC60’s boot at 483 litres “open” and 613 litres “max”. Volvo doesn’t define the terms on its spec page, but a gap of that size usually reflects how high the load is measured. Again, it’s one boot.

Who measured it. Lexus India quotes 612 litres for the RX 350h. Autocar India’s review quoted 460 litres. Neither is wrong; they are measuring differently.

US figures. American spec sheets quote cubic feet using a different method again, so a converted US figure is not directly comparable with a European litre figure.

Plug-in hybrid batteries. A plug-in hybrid often loses boot space to its battery. Mercedes-Benz India quotes 345 litres for the S 450e, while Autocar India’s S-Class page lists 540 litres, which appears to be a non-hybrid figure. If you are buying a plug-in, check the figure for that exact powertrain.

The practical rule: compare cars using the same method where you can, treat gaps of under 50 litres as a tie, and never trust a single number from a listing without knowing how it was measured.

Biggest boots: five-seat luxury SUVs

SUV

Boot behind rear seats

Method / source

Ex-showroom (from)

Range Rover

818 litres (1,050 wet)

VDA dry and wet, Land Rover

Rs 2.40 crore

Land Rover Defender 110 (5-seat)

786 litres (972 wet)

VDA dry and wet, Land Rover

Rs 1.07 crore

BMW X5

650 litres

BMW India

Rs 96.90 lakh

Rolls-Royce Cullinan

612 litres

Autocar India

Rs 10.33 crore

Lexus RX 350h

612 litres (460 per Autocar India)

Lexus India; Autocar India review

Rs 89.99 lakh

Range Rover Velar

558 litres

Autocar India

Rs 81 lakh

Maserati Grecale

535 litres

Autocar India

Rs 1.31 crore (launch)

Volvo XC60

483 litres “open”, 613 “max”

Volvo India

Rs 70.90 lakh

Lamborghini Urus SE

454 litres

Autocar India

Rs 4.57 crore

Prices are Autocar India ex-showroom listings, updated 12 to 23 October 2026, except the Lexus (Lexus India) and the Grecale (July 2024 launch price; a facelift launches on 30 October 2026). Range Rover figures are for the standard-wheelbase body; Land Rover lists the same 818 litres behind the second row of the long-wheelbase five-seater, which is the version Autocar India lists for India. The BMW X5 figure is from BMW India’s 2019 launch release for the current generation.

What the table tells you:

Land Rover wins, by design. The Range Rover and Defender have tall, square load bays. That shape is worth more than any litre figure when you are loading boxy suitcases.

The X5 is the value pick for luggage. At 650 litres, it gives you most of a Defender’s boot for less money, in a car that rides and drives better on the road.

A sloping roof costs you. The Urus SE, Grecale and Velar trade boot height for style. All three are fine for a couple’s weekend. A family airport run with four large suitcases is a different matter.

Seven-seaters: boot space with every seat in use

This is where most families get caught out. A seven-seat SUV with all three rows up often has a smaller boot than a five-seat hatchback.

SUV

Behind 3rd row (all seats up)

Behind 2nd row (3rd row folded)

Method / source

Mercedes-Benz GLS

About 493 litres (17.4 cu ft)

About 1,209 litres (42.7 cu ft)

US figures, Mercedes-Benz USA (2021 AMG GLS 63), converted

Volvo XC90

302 litres “open”, 356 “max”

680 “open”, 1,007 “max”

Volvo India

BMW X7

300 litres

Not stated (up to 2,120 litres max)

Autocar India; BMW India

Land Rover Defender 130 (7-seat)

290 litres (389 wet)

1,012 litres (1,226 wet)

VDA dry and wet, Land Rover

Land Rover Defender 110 (5+2)

160 litres (231 wet)

743 litres (916 wet)

VDA dry and wet, Land Rover

Prices: Mercedes GLS from Rs 1.38 crore, Volvo XC90 Rs 98.80 lakh, BMW X7 from Rs 1.32 crore (Autocar India, October 2026). The Defender range starts at Rs 1.07 crore for the 110.

Reading this table honestly: the GLS figure looks biggest, but it is a US measurement converted to litres, so it is not a fair fight with the European figures. Among the cars measured the European way, the Defender 130 is the clear winner for a full car plus luggage: 290 litres behind the third row, nearly double the Defender 110’s 160 litres. The 110 with the optional +2 seats is really a five-seater with emergency seats; with all seven in use, there is room for a few soft bags at most.

Our view: if you regularly carry six or seven people and their luggage, the Defender 130 or a GLS is the answer, and a roof box is the backup plan. If you only need the third row occasionally, buy for the five-seat boot and fold the third row away.

Luxury sedans: smaller than you’d think

Indian luxury sedan buyers often choose long-wheelbase versions for rear legroom. Boot space is the price.

Sedan

Boot

Source

BMW 7 Series

500 litres

Autocar India

Mercedes-Benz E-Class (LWB)

370 litres

Autocar India

Mercedes-Benz S 450e (plug-in hybrid)

345 litres

Mercedes-Benz India

The S 450e is the cautionary tale. It is a Rs 2.20 crore chauffeur car with a boot smaller than the E-Class’s, because the battery sits under the floor. For a car that will often do airport runs with a family’s luggage, that matters. Our S 450e guide suggests taking your actual luggage to the showroom, and we stand by that.

Beyond litres: what makes a boot usable in India

The spare wheel. Some luxury cars don’t carry one. The facelifted Audi Q7 dropped its spare tyre in favour of run-flats, according to Autocar India’s 2022 launch report, and the Maserati Grecale comes with only a puncture repair kit. The Range Rover Velar, by contrast, has a full-size spare as standard. On Indian highways, a cut sidewall 200km from the nearest dealer is a real risk, so check what you are getting. A spare that lives under the boot floor costs no space; one that sits inside the boot does.

Loading height. If the car has air suspension, ask whether it has a loading or access-height mode. Where it is offered, it makes a real difference with heavy bags, and for older family members lifting their own luggage.

Shape over volume. A tall, square boot swallows hard suitcases better than a long, shallow one with a sloping roof, even if the litre figures match. Look at the opening, not just the floor.

Seat folding. Check how the rear seats split (40:20:40 is the most flexible), whether they fold flat, and whether the third row folds electrically. On the Velar, for instance, the rear seats split 40:20:40.

The suitcase test. Before you buy, put your two largest suitcases, the cabin bags and the golf set or pram in the boot. It takes ten minutes and settles the question better than any spec sheet.

Our picks

Biggest five-seat boot: the Range Rover, with the Defender 110 a very close second for less than half the price.

Best value for luggage: the BMW X5, with 650 litres from under Rs 1 crore.

Seven people and their bags: the Land Rover Defender 130, or a Mercedes GLS if you prefer an on-road luxury SUV.

Best sedan for luggage: the BMW 7 Series, at 500 litres.

Think twice if luggage matters: plug-in hybrids such as the S 450e, coupe-style SUVs, and any seven-seater you plan to use fully loaded.

All of these are also available pre-owned. Measured with Land Rover’s liquid method, the figures rise to 1,050 and 972 litres.

Which 7-seater luxury SUV has the most boot space with all seats up?

Among cars measured the European way, the Land Rover Defender 130 has the most, at 290 litres behind the third row by Land Rover’s figures. Mercedes-Benz quotes 17.4 cubic feet (about 493 litres) for the GLS, but that is a US measurement and not directly comparable.

Why do different sources quote different boot space for the same car?

Car makers measure boots in different ways: with standard blocks (VDA), with simulated liquid, up to the parcel shelf or up to the roof. Land Rover quotes the Defender 110’s boot as 786 litres by blocks and 972 litres by liquid, and the Lexus RX 350h is quoted at 612 litres by Lexus India and 460 litres by Autocar India.

Do plug-in hybrids have smaller boots?

Often, yes, because the battery takes up space. Mercedes-Benz India quotes 345 litres for the S 450e plug-in hybrid, while Autocar India lists 540 litres for the S-Class in a figure that appears to be for a non-hybrid. Always check the boot figure for the exact powertrain.

Which luxury sedan has the biggest boot in India?

Of the sedans we checked, the BMW 7 Series has the biggest boot at 500 litres, according to Autocar India. The long-wheelbase Mercedes E-Class has 370 litres, and the S 450e plug-in hybrid has 345 litres.

Is BMW X5 boot space enough for a family of four?

For most families, yes. BMW India quotes 650 litres with the rear seats up, rising to 1,870 litres with them folded, which is more than many larger seven-seaters offer with all seats in use. Test it with your own luggage, especially if you travel with large hard-shell suitcases.

Of the luxury cars we compared, the Range Rover and the Land Rover Defender 110 have the biggest boots behind the rear seats, at 818 litres and 786 litres, by Land Rover’s block-measured figures.
