That split matters more than the price tag. The Range Rover, the most expensive SUV here, sits in the middle on both counts. Use the numbers below to shortlist, then sit in the car with the seat set where you would actually drive, because brands measure cabins in slightly different ways and a sunroof can take away more space than any spec sheet shows.

Front headroom and legroom: eight luxury SUVs compared

SUV

Front headroom

Front legroom

Second-row legroom

Ex-showroom price (from)

BMW X7

1,064mm

1,011mm

954mm

Rs 1.32 crore

BMW X5

1,037mm (1,033mm with sunroof)

1,011mm

950mm

Rs 96.90 lakh

Land Rover Defender 110

1,032mm

993mm

992mm (5-seat)

Rs 1.07 crore

Mercedes-Benz GLS

1,001mm

1,024mm

1,064mm

Rs 1.38 crore

Range Rover (SWB)

999mm

1,013mm

1,027mm

Rs 2.40 crore

Audi Q7

993mm

1,054mm

998mm

Rs 87.17 lakh

Volvo XC90

987mm (with panoramic roof)

1,038mm

940mm

Rs 98.80 lakh

Volvo XC60

966mm (with panoramic roof)

1,055mm

965mm

Rs 70.90 lakh

Sources for dimensions: BMW Canada 2021 model-year product guides (X5, X7), Land Rover 2025 and 2024 technical specification sheets (Defender, Range Rover; maximum values), Mercedes-Benz USA specifications for the 2021 GLS, Audi USA 2027 model-year technical specifications (Q7), Volvo Cars India specification pages (XC60, XC90). US figures converted from inches. Prices: Autocar India model pages, updated 8 to 23 October 2026.

How to read this table

Three cautions before you take these numbers at face value.

Brands don’t all measure the same way. US spec sheets follow American measuring conventions, Land Rover quotes maximum values, and Volvo India quotes figures with the panoramic roof fitted. A 10mm gap between two brands is not meaningful. A 60mm gap is.

Some figures are a few model years old. BMW’s and Mercedes’ most recent detailed cabin figures we could find are for the 2021 model year, and the Mercedes figures are for the AMG GLS 63, whose sports seats may sit differently from the GLS 450’s. The X5, X7 and GLS sold in India today are facelifts of those same generations, so the body and cabin should be very close, but treat the numbers as a guide.

Sunroofs cost headroom. BMW’s own figures show the X5 losing a few millimetres of front headroom with a sunroof, and Land Rover lists a 34mm drop in second-row headroom on the Defender 90 with the panoramic or folding fabric roof. Since so many luxury SUVs in India are specified with a sunroof, the figure that applies to the car you buy may be the lower one.

What the numbers tell you

Tall in the body: look at the BMW X7, X5 and Defender. The X7 has the most front headroom here, 27mm more than the X5, and the X5 and Defender 110 are close behind. If you are tall mostly from the waist up, and your head brushes the roof lining in most cars, these three are the ones to try first.

Long in the legs: look at the Volvo XC60, Audi Q7 and XC90. This is the surprise in the data. The XC60, the smallest and cheapest SUV here, has the most front legroom of all eight, slightly ahead of the much bigger Audi Q7. Its headroom is the lowest in the table, though, so it suits a long-legged driver with an average-height torso better than a tall one all over.

The Defender trade-off. The Defender 110 has generous headroom but the shortest front legroom of the eight, at 993mm. Its upright, boxy cabin gives your head room to spare and your knees less. Very tall drivers with long legs should try the seat fully back before signing up.

Price does not buy space. The Range Rover costs more than twice as much as an X5 and has less front headroom on paper. You pay for the Range Rover’s other qualities, not for extra room up front.

If you will sit behind yourself. A tall driver pushes the front seat back, and the person behind pays for it. Here the Mercedes GLS (1,064mm) and the Range Rover (1,027mm in short-wheelbase form, 1,220mm in the long-wheelbase version, per Land Rover) leave the most room in the second row. The Volvo XC90 has the least of the eight, which is worth knowing for a family car.

Seat position matters more than the spec sheet

Headroom and legroom figures tell you how big the space is. They don’t tell you whether you can sit properly in it. For a tall driver, three adjustments decide that:

Seat height range. The lowest setting matters most. A seat that drops low gives you headroom that no spec sheet records. Lower the seat fully on the test drive and check you can still see over the dashboard and bonnet.

Steering reach and rake. Long-limbed drivers often find either the steering wheel or the pedals too far away, a point Team-BHP members made in a 2023 thread about cars for a 6’5″ driver. Make sure the wheel pulls out far enough that you are not sitting close to the pedals just to reach it. Check that both adjustments are electric and how far they actually travel; the range varies from car to car.

Thigh support. One tall Team-BHP member in the same thread suggested your thighs should sit roughly parallel to the ground. Where a car offers an extendable seat cushion, it can help a long-legged driver more than a few extra millimetres of legroom.

Test-drive checklist for tall drivers

Take this with you to the showroom:

Set the seat exactly where you would drive before you judge the space, not where the salesperson left it.

Check the gap above your head with the sunroof closed and the blind drawn. On cars with a panoramic roof, also check the front edge of the roof frame, which sits lower than the glass.

Get in and out three or four times. A low door opening or a thick roof pillar can mean you knock your head every time, even if headroom is fine once seated.

Look at the interior mirror and the sun visors. On some cars a tall driver’s eye line sits right where the mirror is, creating a blind spot to the left.

Sit behind your own driving position. If the car is for the family, someone will spend hours back there.

Drive over a speed breaker. Firm suspension and a low roof together can bump your head on rough roads, something a showroom sit can’t tell you.

Should tall drivers avoid the panoramic sunroof?

Not necessarily, but you should check. The roof structure and the blind add thickness, and the effect varies by car. On the BMW X5 the loss in front headroom is small by BMW’s figures; on other cars the difference can be larger. Since the panoramic roof is also a debatable feature in Indian heat, our post on whether a panoramic sunroof is worth it in India covers the rest of that decision.

Our picks for tall drivers

Tallest overall: the BMW X7, for the most front headroom here and a big cabin all round. The X5 gives most of the same headroom for considerably less.

Long legs, sensible budget: the Volvo XC60, if your height is mostly in your legs. Try it with and without a sunroof if you can.

Long legs and a big family: the Audi Q7, which pairs strong front legroom with a usable second row.

Tall driver, tall family: the Mercedes GLS, which leaves the most room for the person behind you.

Tall and adventurous: the Defender 110, as long as your legs fit at the seat’s rearmost setting.

All of these are also available on the pre-owned market. You can browse pre-owned luxury SUVs listed on Motozite, compare the BMW X5, Mercedes GLE and Audi Q7 in more detail, or read our pre-owned Range Rover and Defender guide before you buy used.

FAQ

Which luxury SUV has the most headroom in India?

Of the eight luxury SUVs we compared using manufacturer figures, the BMW X7 has the most front headroom at 1,064mm, followed by the BMW X5 at 1,037mm and the Land Rover Defender 110 at 1,032mm. Brands measure slightly differently, so sit in the car before deciding.

Which luxury SUV has the most front legroom?

The Volvo XC60 has the most front legroom of the cars we compared, at 1,055mm according to Volvo Cars India, just ahead of the Audi Q7 at about 1,054mm. The XC60 has the least front headroom of the group, so it suits long-legged drivers more than tall drivers overall.

Does a panoramic sunroof reduce headroom?

Usually, yes. BMW’s figures for the X5 show slightly less front headroom with a sunroof, and Land Rover lists 34mm less second-row headroom on the Defender 90 with a panoramic or folding fabric roof. Check the space with the blind closed and look at the roof frame above the windscreen.

Is a 6’4″ person comfortable in a luxury SUV?

Many tall drivers fit large luxury SUVs well, but comfort depends on seat height range, steering reach and whether the car has a sunroof. Choose on headroom if you are tall in the body and on legroom if you are tall in the legs, and always test with the seat set to your driving position.

What should a tall driver check on a test drive?

Set the seat to your real driving position, lower it fully, extend the steering wheel and check thigh support. Then check head clearance under the sunroof frame, get in and out several times, check the mirror isn’t blocking your view, and sit in the seat behind your own.

Is the Range Rover good for tall drivers?

The Range Rover offers 999mm of front headroom and 1,013mm of front legroom by Land Rover’s figures, which is good but not the most among large luxury SUVs. Its long-wheelbase version is excellent for tall rear passengers, with up to 1,220mm of second-row legroom.

If you are over six feet tall, the luxury SUVs with the most front headroom on paper are the BMW X7, BMW X5 and Land Rover Defender 110, each with more than 1,030mm according to their makers’ figures.
