The top systems are serious kit. Mercedes’s ENERGIZING AIR CONTROL Plus on the EQS removes over 99.65 percent of particles, while Volvo’s Advanced Air Cleaner blocks up to 95 percent of PM2.5 and shows you the reading on screen. In Delhi-NCR’s winter, this is a genuine health feature, as long as you keep the windows shut and replace the filter on time. Fragrance systems, however nice, don’t clean anything.

Why cabin air matters in an Indian winter

Air quality in Delhi-NCR slipped to “poor” on 21 October 2026, with an AQI of 244 at 2 pm, and Stage-I of GRAP was invoked across the region. Traffic adds to it, because you’re sitting in the exhaust plume of the car ahead.

Closing the windows doesn’t solve this on its own. In a Los Angeles study of 17 taxis, reported by The Star, closed windows with the original filters made no significant difference. Closed windows with a high-efficiency cabin filter cut in-cabin PM2.5 by 37 percent compared with normal driving. So the filter makes the difference.

The building blocks of a cabin air system

Component

What it does

Example

Particle filter

Traps dust, pollen and fine particles

Standard pollen filter, HEPA filter

Activated carbon

Adsorbs gases and odours

About 600g in Mercedes’s EQS filter

PM2.5 sensor

Measures particles, shows them on screen

Volvo, Mercedes

Ioniser

Charges particles so they clump or stick to filters

Audi air quality package, Volvo

Hydroxyl generator

Releases radicals to act on allergens and odours

Lexus nanoe X

Air management

Closes vents, switches to recirculation

Volvo CleanZone

Pre-entry cleaning

Runs the system before you get in

Mercedes

Fragrance

Adds scent only

Audi, Mercedes

How the leading systems compare

Mercedes-Benz: ENERGIZING AIR CONTROL Plus

This is the benchmark, as an option on the EQS. The filter measures 596 x 412 x 40mm and removes over 99.65 percent of particles under DIN EN 1822, from PM 2.5 down to PM 0.3, Mercedes says. It also has about 600g of coconut-shell activated charcoal, which takes on sulphur dioxide, nitrogen oxides and odours. Sensors track fine dust inside and outside the car, and MBUX displays it in real time. It can even suggest closing the windows or sunroof when outside air is poor. Pre-entry climate control can clean the cabin before you get in, which we think is the feature that matters most at a school or office pick-up.

Volvo: Advanced Air Cleaner

Volvo’s system uses a synthetic-fibre filter and ionisation. It blocks up to 95 percent of PM2.5 on the 60 and 90 series, and up to 80 percent on 40 series models, Volvo says, and a sensor lets you compare the cabin and outside readings on the central display. Volvo’s CleanZone can close the external vents and switch to recirculation by itself. Volvo also says its Advanced Air Cleaner is certified asthma and allergy friendly by Allergy Standards Limited. We like the display here. Seeing the number makes you trust the system, or tells you when it’s time for a new filter.

Lexus: nanoe X

Lexus takes a different route. nanoe X releases water particles carrying hydroxyl radicals into the airflow, as part of its Climate Concierge system on models such as the ES and RX. Lexus says lab testing found it could inhibit over 99 percent of viruses and bacteria within an hour. Treat this as a manufacturer claim, and note that it’s not a replacement for a filter. It works alongside one.

Audi: air quality package

Audi’s package on the A8 uses two ionisers that give air molecules a negative charge, so dust clumps and falls, plus a combination filter for gases and particles and a fragrance option.

Which of these features are worth paying for?

Worth it: a strong particle filter, an activated carbon layer, and pre-entry cleaning if you’re in a polluted city. A University of Birmingham study found carbon filters cut in-cabin nitrogen dioxide by up to 90 percent compared with outside levels, while standard pollen filters made little difference.

Useful: a PM2.5 display. It doesn’t clean the air, but it tells you what’s happening.

Unproven at home: lab claims around viruses and bacteria. Labs aren’t cabins, and we couldn’t find independent real-world tests from Indian conditions.

Pleasant, not functional: fragrance. It covers smells. It doesn’t remove pollutants.

Our HEPA vs standard cabin filters post goes through the filter choice in detail.

How to get the best out of your system

Keep windows and the sunroof closed in traffic. The filter can only clean air that goes through it.

Use recirculation in short bursts. Studies find the lowest particle levels in recirculation, but carbon dioxide builds up, so go back to fresh air on long drives. The Star’s review recommends the same.

Change the filter on time. A Chalmers simulation reported 55 percent PM2.5 reduction with a new filter and 39 percent with an aged one. During a Delhi winter, consider replacing it sooner than the normal schedule, and ask your authorised workshop.

Run the system before the family gets in. Pre-entry cleaning, or even a few minutes with doors closed, helps.

Clean the cabin. Dust in the carpets gets kicked back into the air.

Buying used

Check whether the car has the feature, because air packages are often options. Then ask when the filter was last changed. On a car from Motozite’s pre-owned listings, a fresh filter is a small cost, so have it replaced by an authorised workshop before the car goes into family use. Confirm India-spec equipment with the seller and the build sheet, since global press releases often describe features that may differ here.

FAQ: cabin air purification in luxury cars

Do luxury cars have air purifiers?

Many do. Mercedes offers ENERGIZING AIR CONTROL Plus with a HEPA filter on the EQS, Volvo has its Advanced Air Cleaner, and Lexus uses nanoe X. Equipment varies by model and market, so confirm what’s fitted on the India-spec variant before you buy.

Which car has the best air filtration?

On published figures, Mercedes’s ENERGIZING AIR CONTROL Plus is among the strongest, removing over 99.65 percent of particles. Volvo’s Advanced Air Cleaner blocks up to 95 percent of PM2.5. Real-world results depend on the filter’s age, whether windows are closed and how you use the climate system.

Does a car air filter protect from pollution in Delhi?

It helps, particularly with the windows closed and a good filter. A Los Angeles taxi study found a high-efficiency filter with closed windows cut in-cabin PM2.5 by 37 percent. Particle filters do little for gases, so an activated carbon layer is also useful.

Should I use recirculation mode in pollution?

Yes, in short bursts. Studies show the lowest particle levels inside cars in recirculation, but carbon dioxide builds up over time, which can make you drowsy. Use it in heavy traffic, then switch back to fresh air when the air clears or on longer drives.

Are in-car ionisers useful?

They can help particles clump or stick to filters, and Audi and Volvo both use them with a filter. They aren’t a replacement for one. Treat lab claims about viruses and bacteria as manufacturer claims, not as proof of real-world performance.

How often should I replace a cabin air filter?

Follow your car’s service schedule, and consider going sooner in a heavily polluted city. A Chalmers simulation found PM2.5 reduction fell from 55 percent with a new filter to 39 percent with an aged one. Your authorised workshop can check the filter’s condition at each service.

A luxury car’s cabin air system cleans incoming air with a multi-layer filter, then adds sensors, ionisers or hydroxyl generators, and often a pre-entry cleaning function.
