Self-sealing tyres have a sticky inner layer that plugs small tread punctures, up to about 4mm on Pirelli’s Seal Inside, so the air stays in and you may not even notice. Run-flats cover worse damage, including some sidewall hits. Self-sealing tyres ride more like normal tyres. On India’s broken roads, stiff run-flat sidewalls are the bigger worry, and if your car has a spare, a good ordinary tyre is often the better choice.

Run-flat vs self-sealing: side by side

Run-flat

Self-sealing

What it does

Holds the car up with no air

Plugs the hole, keeps the air in

Limit

About 80km at 80 km/h (Pirelli)

Tread punctures up to about 4mm (Pirelli Seal Inside)

Sidewall damage

Can keep you moving

Usually won’t seal

Large tread cut

Keeps you moving

Tyre goes flat

Ride comfort

Firmer, stiff sidewalls

Close to a normal tyre

TPMS needed

Yes, plus specific rims (Pirelli)

Not required by Pirelli

Repair after puncture

Few shops will repair it

Sealed in use, still needs checking

Best for

Cars with no spare

Most nail and screw punctures

How run-flat tyres work

The sidewalls are reinforced so they can support the car when pressure is gone. You keep steering control, which is the real safety benefit at highway speed, and you can drive to a safe stop or a tyre shop. BMW has been the best-known user, having dropped the spare from many models to save space and weight.

The catch is that the same stiffness gets in the way on normal roads. Autocar India explained this in April 2026, answering an M340i owner: low-profile run-flats absorb little impact, so a sharp pothole sends the shock more directly into the tyre and wheel, which can cause sidewall damage or bulges. It also noted that the problem isn’t unique to BMW, naming the Mercedes-AMG C43 as a similar case. Autocar’s own M340i review says the 19-inch wheels and run-flats make the car firmer than a standard long-wheelbase 3 Series.

Because you can’t see that a run-flat has lost air, a working tyre pressure monitor is essential. Pirelli says these tyres need TPMS. You should treat a low-pressure warning as an instruction to slow down at once. Our TPMS guide explains how those systems work.

How self-sealing tyres work

Inside the tread is a sticky sealant layer. When a nail goes through, the layer closes around it and stays closed when the nail comes out. Tyre Reviews says Continental’s seal tyres can take many punctures with no meaningful pressure loss, and that they drive like normal tyres. SlashGear puts the limit at about a quarter of an inch, or about 6mm, while Pirelli gives 4mm for Seal Inside. So work with the smaller number.

Their limits are clear. The sealant usually doesn’t cover the sidewall, so a sidewall hit means a flat, just as with an ordinary tyre. A large tread cut won’t seal either. And because the tyre seals itself, you might never know you’ve collected a screw, so check your tyres regularly as Pirelli recommends.

Which is better on Indian roads?

We see Indian roads as mainly a pothole problem, and that changes the comparison.

Nails and screws. Self-sealing tyres shine here. If you do lots of city driving, most punctures you’ll meet are the small tread kind that a seal tyre handles without any fuss.

Sharp potholes. Neither type wins. A run-flat keeps you moving afterwards, but its stiff sidewall can be the reason it was damaged in the first place. A seal tyre won’t help if the sidewall tears.

Highway blowouts and sudden pressure loss. Run-flats have the clear advantage in control, and they let you reach a safe place. On a dark highway, that’s worth something.

Ride comfort. Self-sealing tyres win, and so do ordinary tyres. On a car already running low-profile tyres, this is a noticeable daily difference.

Availability. Seal tyres are made by brands like Pirelli, Continental and Michelin, but stock varies a lot by size. Check Indian availability for your size before planning a switch.

Should you switch off run-flats?

Autocar India’s answer for the M340i was yes, if your roads are bad. Non-run-flat tyres flex more, improving comfort and reducing the risk of damage, and that model already carries a space-saver spare. It’s worth noting that taller sidewalls may mean smaller wheels, which adds cost.

Our view follows from that:

Car has a spare, you drive on poor roads: Move to a good non-run-flat at your next tyre change, and check with an authorised workshop first.

Car has no spare and no room for one: Stay with run-flats, or pair seal tyres with a repair kit and a roadside assistance plan. Tyre Reviews’ author still preferred a normal tyre and a spare where possible, and so do we.

Mostly highways, long distances, alone at night: Run-flats’ ability to get you to safety carries real value.

Under warranty: Ask the brand before changing tyre type, and match the load and speed ratings.

Costs and repairs

We couldn’t find reliable Indian retail prices across sizes, so get a quote for your exact size. Do remember three things: run-flats wear out and can be damaged without much warning, few shops will repair them, and a car driven on a flat run-flat beyond the limit may need a new tyre even if it looks fine. Replace in pairs on the same axle where the tyres are worn.

If you’re buying used, check all four tyres for bulges, look for run-flat markings on the sidewall, and find out whether a spare or repair kit is actually in the boot. That check applies to any car in Motozite’s pre-owned listings, along with a workshop inspection.

FAQ: run-flat vs self-sealing tyres

What is the difference between run-flat and self-sealing tyres?

Run-flats have reinforced sidewalls that support the car after losing air. Self-sealing tyres have a sticky inner layer that plugs small tread punctures so air stays in. Run-flats handle worse damage, while self-sealing tyres ride more like normal tyres.

How far can you drive on a run-flat tyre?

Typically about 80km at up to 80 km/h, according to Pirelli. Check your own tyre and owner’s manual, because limits can vary by tyre and car load. Have the tyre inspected afterwards, as it may not be safe to reuse.

Are run-flat tyres good for Indian roads?

They’re useful for staying mobile after a puncture, but their stiff sidewalls absorb little impact. Autocar India says sharp potholes can cause sidewall damage or bulges on low-profile run-flats, and it recommends non-run-flats on poor roads for cars that have a spare.

Can self-sealing tyres seal a sidewall puncture?

Usually not. The sealant generally covers the tread only, so a sidewall hit or large slash can leave you with a flat. Pirelli’s Seal Inside closes tread punctures up to about 4mm, and regular checks are still recommended.

Can I replace run-flat tyres with normal tyres?

Often, yes, but plan for a puncture. Autocar India says the switch makes sense on an M340i because it has a space-saver spare. Check that your car has a spare or kit, match the ratings, and ask an authorised workshop about any TPMS or warranty effect.

Do run-flat tyres need TPMS?

Yes. Because you can’t easily see that a run-flat has lost pressure, Pirelli says a tyre pressure monitoring system is needed, along with specific rims. Self-sealing tyres don’t need one according to Pirelli, but they still benefit from it.

Run-flat tyres keep a luxury car moving after losing all their air, typically for about 80km at up to 80 km/h, thanks to reinforced sidewalls.
