Indirect TPMS has no sensors of its own. It uses the ABS wheel-speed sensors to spot a tyre that’s turning faster than the others because it has lost air. Direct is more accurate and shows actual pressure, but sensors cost money and their batteries last about five to ten years. Indirect costs little and needs no battery, but it’s less sensitive and needs a reset after a tyre change. If your luxury car runs on run-flats, a working TPMS isn’t optional.

Direct vs indirect TPMS: side by side

Direct TPMS

Indirect TPMS

How it detects

Sensor measures pressure in each tyre

ABS sensors compare wheel speeds

Shows actual pressure

Yes, on most cars

Usually a warning only

Sensitivity

Higher

Lower

Battery

Yes, typically 5 to 10 years

None

Wheel change

Sensors may need programming

Reset after pressure or tyre change

Aftermarket wheels

Sensors must fit

Different sizes can upset it

Failure point

Sensor damage, flat battery

Won’t spot four tyres low together

The figures above come from Brake & Front End, a US trade publication. Both systems are built to warn the driver once pressure has dropped well below the recommended level, so TPMS tells you there’s a problem. It doesn’t replace checking your tyres.

How direct TPMS works

A small sensor sits at each wheel, usually at the base of the valve, and sends pressure by radio to the car. Sensors also tell the car which wheel they’re on, which is why your display can show each corner.

The drawback is that these are small, sealed parts in a harsh place. Batteries typically last five to ten years, according to Brake & Front End, so a car around that age could need new sensors, one at a time or as a set. They can also be broken during a tyre change. On a pre-owned luxury car bought at seven or eight years old, that’s a realistic cost to expect. We couldn’t find published Indian sensor prices, so ask the authorised workshop for a quote.

Direct systems usually need a relearn after a sensor swap or when wheels are moved. That’s why a roadside tyre shop can leave you with a warning light on, even though the tyres are fine.

How indirect TPMS works

A tyre with less air has a slightly smaller diameter, so it spins faster than the others. The ABS system already measures wheel speeds, so software can compare them and raise a warning.

It’s clever and cheap, and there’s no battery to die. But it’s less sensitive than direct TPMS. It’s also comparing tyres with one another, so if all four lose pressure slowly in the same way, it’s likely to say nothing. Our advice with indirect systems is to reset the car only after the tyres are set correctly, otherwise it learns the wrong starting point.

Is TPMS mandatory in India?

Not on every car, as far as we can establish, but it’s built into Indian rules. India’s AIS 154 standard, which sets out TPMS requirements, applies to M1 passenger vehicles up to 3,500kg and N1 vehicles when they’re equipped with TPMS. It’s aligned with UN R 141, but it tests from 0 to 50 degrees C, not 0 to 40 degrees C, which suits Indian conditions.

A 2020 notification, GSR 457(E), allows cars with tubeless tyres to go without a spare if they have both a tyre repair kit and TPMS. MotorBeam reported that the system must work from 40 km/h up to the car’s top speed. It’s worth remembering when you see a car with a kit and no spare in the boot.

Why it matters more in India

Run-flats. A run-flat keeps its shape with no air, so you can’t see the problem. Pirelli says these tyres need TPMS. If you’re on a BMW with run-flats, a failed sensor removes your warning. See our run-flat vs self-sealing guide.

Low-profile tyres. Tyres on big wheels don’t look flat until it’s bad, and low pressure makes pothole damage worse.

Heat. Long, fast expressway runs heat up the tyres and raise pressure. Under-inflated tyres run hotter still. So set pressures when cold, using the figures on the door jamb, and treat the display as a guide.

Slow punctures. The commonest city problem. A nail can bleed air for days, and a direct system is often the first thing to reveal it.

Common warnings and what to do

Steady light, tyre low. Slow down, check all four tyres at the next safe stop, and inflate them to the door-jamb pressure.

Flashing light, then steady. On many cars, this means a system or sensor fault, not a low tyre. Check your owner’s manual.

Warning after a tyre change. The shop may have damaged a sensor, or the car needs a relearn or reset.

Warning in a cold spell. Pressure drops as temperature falls, so check it and top up.

Aftermarket wheels and sensors

If you fit new alloys on a direct-TPMS car, the sensors must either move across or be replaced, and Brake & Front End notes aftermarket wheels may not fit them. On an indirect car, different sizes can upset the system. Our car modification guide covers the bigger wheel question. The sensible route is the factory-approved wheel for your model, fitted by a workshop that has the right tool.

Which is better?

Direct, if you have the choice. Seeing real pressure in each tyre lets you catch a slow puncture early. For a luxury car on low-profile tyres, that’s worth the cost of a sensor every few years. Indirect does the job, as long as you don’t treat silence as proof your tyres are fine.

Check the system before you buy any pre-owned car. Confirm that it reads all four wheels on the dash, ask when sensors were last replaced, and have an authorised workshop scan for faults on any car from Motozite’s pre-owned listings.

FAQ: direct vs indirect TPMS

What is the difference between direct and indirect TPMS?

Direct TPMS uses a pressure sensor in each wheel and reports actual readings. Indirect TPMS uses ABS wheel-speed sensors to detect a tyre spinning faster because it’s lost air. Direct is more sensitive, while indirect has no sensors or batteries to replace.

How long do TPMS sensors last?

Direct TPMS sensors use sealed batteries that typically last five to ten years, according to Brake & Front End. As a car ages, sensor failure becomes more likely. They can also be damaged during tyre changes, so use a workshop that knows the system.

Is TPMS mandatory in India?

We couldn’t confirm a rule requiring it on every car. India’s AIS 154 standard covers cars fitted with TPMS, and since 2020 cars with tubeless tyres can skip the spare only with a tyre repair kit and TPMS. Check your car’s equipment list.

Why is my TPMS light on after changing tyres?

A sensor may have been damaged, or the system may need a relearn or reset. Indirect systems usually need resetting after tyre work. Direct systems may need sensor positions reprogrammed. Check that pressures are correct, then ask a workshop with the right tool.

Can indirect TPMS detect all four tyres losing pressure?

It can struggle to. Indirect TPMS compares wheel speeds, so if all four tyres lose pressure evenly, it may not notice. That’s a good reason to check tyres with a reliable gauge every couple of weeks, whichever system your car has.

Does a car with run-flat tyres need TPMS?

Yes. Pirelli says run-flats need TPMS, because you can’t easily see when one has lost pressure. A warning tells you to slow down and head to a tyre shop within the run-flat’s distance and speed limits.

Direct TPMS uses a battery-powered pressure sensor inside each wheel and reports real readings to the dash.
