BMW Premium Selection vs Mercedes Certified vs Audi Approved: plus vs Volvo Selekt

BMW Premium Selection, Mercedes-Benz Certified, Audi Approved, and Volvo Selekt are the four main manufacturer-backed pre-owned programmes for luxury cars in India. They differ mainly in three things: how old and how far-driven a car can be to qualify, how detailed the inspection is, and how long the warranty runs. On published terms, Audi’s two-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty is the most generous, and Volvo publishes the clearest eligibility rules. The bigger lesson, though, is that the label on the windscreen matters less than the warranty terms you get in writing for the specific car you buy.

That last point is not a throwaway. Some of these programmes have not published updated terms in years, and dealers within the same network can bundle different extras. Use the comparison below as a starting point for your questions, not as a final answer.

Read the last column before the others. Volvo’s figures are on its current Indian website. Audi’s date from 2021. BMW’s and Mercedes’ figures go back to the launch of their programmes, and neither brand publishes current numbers on its Indian site that I could find. Treat those two rows as a guide to what to ask, and expect the current terms to differ.

BMW Premium Selection

BMW launched Premium Selection in India in November 2011. At launch, cars had to be under five years old with less than 1,20,000km on the clock, and came with a warranty of up to 24 months or 2,00,000km. Each car got what BMW called a 360-degree technical and visual check, plus refurbishment and a full record of servicing and repairs.

BMW India’s current Premium Selection page still describes the 360-degree check, a document check and a road test. It doesn’t give a warranty length or a point count. It does list what the warranty excludes, and that list is worth reading: paint and body damage, glass, tyres and wheels, interior defects, consumables and anything caused by non-original accessories.

Mercedes-Benz Certified

Mercedes ran its pre-owned programme as Proven Exclusivity from 2010 and relaunched it as Mercedes-Benz Certified in December 2014. The eligibility rules are the strictest of the four on paper: up to five years old, under 1,00,000km, no accident history and no more than two previous owners. Evo India reported a 139-point inspection by trained Mercedes staff, and both Autocar India and Evo India reported a manufacturer-backed warranty of one year or 20,000km.

The two-owner and no-accident rules are the useful part. They filter out exactly the cars you’d worry about most. The one-year, 20,000km warranty is the weakest of the four on published terms, so ask whether it can be extended and at what cost.

Audi Approved: plus

Audi India’s 2021 announcement lists more than 300 checks across the mechanicals, bodywork, interior and electrics, plus a full road test, and a two-year warranty with unlimited kilometres. 24×7 roadside assistance is included. On published terms, that is the most comprehensive package here.

Some Audi Approved: plus outlets also sell other brands’ cars, as Mercedes’ pre-owned network does. If you are shopping for a non-Audi at an Audi outlet, confirm whether the Approved: plus warranty applies to that car, because it may not.

Volvo Selekt

Volvo is the most transparent of the four. Its Indian website states that Selekt cars are always under five years old with less than 75,000km, carry a full service history from an authorised Volvo retailer and go through a 114-point inspection. They get the latest software updates and at least 12 months of factory warranty with unlimited kilometres, plus Volvo Roadside Assistance.

The 75,000km cap is the tightest of the four, which means a smaller pool of cars but generally younger, lower-mileage ones. For a brand that sells far fewer cars in India than the German three, that is a sensible trade.

Is a certified pre-owned luxury car worth the extra money?

Certified cars usually cost more than the same car from a private seller or an independent dealer. Whether the premium is worth it depends mostly on how complicated the car is.

On a five-year-old luxury SUV with air suspension, a large screen-based cabin and a stack of driver assists, one electronic fault out of warranty can cost a lot more than the certified premium. On a simpler, well-documented car with low running costs, the case is weaker, and an independent inspection plus a third-party extended warranty can do the same job for less.

My view: pay for certification on cars where a single failure would hurt, and on any car with patchy service records. Don’t pay it simply for the badge on the windscreen.

Questions to ask before you buy a certified car

  1. What is the warranty length and kilometre limit for this specific car, and can I see it in writing?
  2. What does the warranty exclude? Ask specifically about electronics, air suspension, the infotainment system and, on hybrids or EVs, the high-voltage battery.
  3. Can I see the inspection checklist for this car, with the items that were repaired or replaced?
  4. How many previous owners has the car had, and has it ever had an insurance claim?
  5. Is the warranty transferable if I sell the car?
  6. Is roadside assistance included, and for how long?
  7. Can the warranty be extended, and at what cost?

Where Motozite fits

Motozite is a marketplace: it lists new, demo and pre-owned luxury cars from sellers across India, but it doesn’t certify, inspect or sell cars itself. A pre-owned listing may come from a brand’s certified outlet, an independent dealer or a private owner, so ask the seller which programme, if any, the car is covered by. You can browse pre-owned luxury cars and pre-owned SUVs, then check the EMI on your shortlist with the car loan EMI calculator.

FAQ

What is BMW Premium Selection?

BMW Premium Selection is BMW India’s manufacturer-backed pre-owned car programme, launched in November 2011. Cars go through a 360-degree technical and visual check, refurbishment and a road test, and come with a full service record. At launch, the warranty ran up to 24 months or 2,00,000km; confirm current terms with the dealer.

What warranty does a Mercedes-Benz Certified car come with?

Mercedes-Benz Certified cars have been reported to carry a manufacturer-backed warranty of one year or 20,000km. Eligible cars must be up to five years old, under 1,00,000km, accident-free, and have had no more than two owners. Mercedes does not publish current terms on its Indian website, so ask the dealer for them in writing.

Which certified pre-owned programme has the best warranty in India?

On published terms, Audi Approved: plus offers the longest cover, at two years with unlimited kilometres. Volvo Selekt offers at least 12 months with unlimited kilometres. Terms for BMW and Mercedes have not been updated publicly in years, so compare the written offer for the specific car you are looking at.

What are the eligibility rules for Volvo Selekt in India?

Volvo Selekt cars in India must be under five years old and have covered less than 75,000km. They need a full service history from an authorised Volvo retailer and pass a 114-point inspection. They come with at least 12 months of factory warranty with unlimited kilometres.

Is a certified pre-owned car better than buying from a private seller?

A certified car costs more but comes with a manufacturer-backed inspection and warranty, which matters most on complex luxury cars with air suspension and heavy electronics. A private-seller car can be good value if it has a full service history and you get an independent inspection before paying. The right choice depends on the car’s complexity and its records.

Can I extend the warranty on a certified pre-owned luxury car?

Most brands offer some form of extended warranty, but terms and costs vary by programme, model, and dealer. Ask for the extended warranty price and coverage in writing before you agree on the car’s price, since it is easier to negotiate both together.
