BMW X6 review

BMW X6 review India: the M60i is now a V8 muscle coupé, and that changes who should buy one

The BMW X6 is now sold in India only as the X6 M60i xDrive, a fully imported model priced at Rs 1,77,90,000 ex-showroom. It pairs a 530hp, 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 with all-wheel drive and rear-wheel steering, and it is properly quick: BMW claims 0-100kph in 4.3 seconds, and Autocar India’s timed run came in at 4.11 seconds. It is a superb performance SUV with a compromised back seat, and anyone who wants the X6 shape without a V8 bill should now be looking at the pre-owned market instead.

What changed: the six-cylinder X6 is gone

When this generation of the X6 arrived in India in June 2020, it cost Rs 95 lakh in xDrive40i xLine and M Sport forms, both with a 3.0-litre turbocharged six. That was the X6 most Indian buyers knew: an X5 with a sloping roof and a bit more attitude, bought by people who liked the look and didn’t mind giving up some rear headroom for it.

The facelift BMW India launched on 26 June 2026 drops that engine entirely. Pre-launch bookings opened on 22 May, and the car that arrived is a single, fully loaded M60i, imported as a completely built-up unit. So the cheapest X6 you can buy new today costs nearly twice what the launch car did six years ago. More importantly, it now competes with a different set of cars.

BMW X6 M60i price in India and on-road cost

BMW’s ex-showroom figure includes GST. Road tax, registration and insurance come on top, and on a car this expensive, they add up quickly. Autocar India’s Delhi estimate (updated 12 October 2026) looks like this:

Cost head (Delhi, individual registration)Amount
Ex-showroom priceRs 1,77,90,000
RTO and registrationRs 17,79,000
InsuranceRs 9,78,450
Other chargesRs 1,78,500
Estimated on-road priceRs 2,07,25,950

That is a Rs 2.07 crore car once it is on the road in Delhi, and the figure will move depending on your state’s road tax. You can run the numbers for your own city on Motozite’s on-road price calculator.

Two more things are worth budgeting for. BMW’s service package (BMW Service Inclusive) and extended warranty are listed as optional add-ons in the launch release, not standard inclusions. And if you finance through BMW India Financial Services, the SMART Finance scheme offers an assured buyback of up to 60 per cent after three years, subject to its terms. For a car in this segment, that buyback number is the closest thing you will get to a guaranteed resale value.

This is the S68 V8, the same basic engine BMW uses in the X6 M Competition (in tweaked form) and that Land Rover uses in the Defender Octa. In the M60i it is the centre of the car’s personality. Autocar India describes a bassy idle that turns loud in Sport Plus, and a 2.4-tonne SUV that beat its own official acceleration figure on test.

The mild-hybrid motor is small, rated at 12hp and 200Nm. Think of it as the thing that makes stop-start and low-speed crawling smoother rather than a source of extra shove. Fuel economy is where the V8 asks you to look away. The claimed 7.89 km/L is a lab figure, and Autocar’s review rates range and efficiency as the car’s weakest area. With an 83-litre tank, the cost of a full tank is a number most X6 owners will stop checking after the first month.

Ride and handling on Indian roads

The M60i comes with adaptive M suspension with electronically controlled dampers, Integral Active Steering (which steers the rear wheels too) and an M Sport differential. It rides on 21-inch wheels with staggered run-flat tyres, 275/40 at the front and 315/35 at the rear.

Autocar India’s verdict on the ride is split, and it matches what you would expect from that hardware. In Comfort mode, the car is more pliant than its size and wheels suggest at highway speeds. On broken city roads, the run-flats let harshness through. Autocar India lists ground clearance at 216mm, so speed breakers and building ramps shouldn’t be a worry.

Our take: this is an expressway car first and a city car second. If your daily drive is the Mumbai-Pune Expressway or the Delhi-Jaipur highway, the X6 will make sense to you within ten minutes. If it is a crawl through Bengaluru’s Outer Ring Road, insist on a test drive on your own route rather than the dealer’s smooth loop before you sign anything. And price in tyres. Replacing four 21-inch run-flats in two different sizes is an expense you will notice.

Interior, features and the back seat problem

The cabin is where the X6 justifies a good part of its price. Standard kit includes BMW’s Curved Display (a 12.3-inch driver screen and a 14.9-inch touchscreen running iDrive OS 8.5), a head-up display, a 16-speaker Harman Kardon system with a 464W amplifier, ventilated front seats with electric adjustment and driver memory, soft-close doors, an ambient light bar and Digital Key Plus. Parking Assistant Professional with a 360-degree camera is standard, and the Reversing Assistant can retrace your last 200 metres. Safety equipment includes six airbags.

Massage front seats, an Alcantara headliner, Crafted Clarity glass controls and BMW Individual paint are options, so check the spec of any car you are quoted on. One gripe carries over from other recent BMWs: climate control sits inside the touchscreen, so small adjustments take more attention than physical switches would.

Now the compromise. Rear headroom is fine for most adults, despite the roofline. The problem is the seat height. Autocar India notes the rear bench is set low and the floor is high, so adults sit knees-up with little thigh support. The boot holds 580 litres and expands to 1,530 litres with the rear seats folded, but the sloping tailgate limits how tall a load can be. Golf bags and large suitcases stood upright will be a struggle.

If your rear passengers are adults on long drives, the BMW X5 is the more sensible BMW. The X6 is for buyers who are honest that the back seat is occasional.

BMW X6 vs Audi SQ8 and other rivals

ModelEx-showroom priceEngine
Porsche Cayenne Coupé GTSRs 2.13 crore4.0-litre V8 petrol
BMW X6 M60i xDriveRs 1.78 crore4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 petrol, mild hybrid
Audi SQ8Rs 1.78 crore (Rs 1,77,72,000)4.0-litre V8 petrol
Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 CoupéRs 1.52 crore3.0-litre turbo six-cylinder petrol

The real fight is with the Audi SQ8, launched in March 2026. On price, the two are within Rs 20,000 of each other. On paper, the Audi has a slight edge in torque (770Nm to the BMW’s 750Nm) and a quicker claimed 0-100kph time of 4.1 seconds, while the BMW has more power at 530hp to the Audi’s 507hp. Autocar India calls the choice between them a matter of personal preference, and that is fair. The X6 is the more playful, rear-biased car with rear-wheel steering. Drive both back to back before deciding.

The Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 Coupé is the cheaper option at about Rs 1.52 crore, but its 435hp six-cylinder is a step down in performance and character. The Porsche Cayenne Coupé GTS is, by Autocar India’s assessment, the sharper car to drive, but at about Rs 2.13 crore before options, it costs a lot more. You can compare current pricing across brands on Motozite’s BMW, Audi and Porsche pages.

Should you buy a new X6 M60i or a pre-owned X6?

Buy the new M60i if performance is the point. For Rs 1.78 crore, it gives you a V8 that outran its own spec sheet, a properly sorted chassis and one of the better cabins in the segment. Just accept that the back seat and boot are second priorities.

If what you actually liked about the X6 was the shape and the badge, the new car is an expensive way to get it. The xDrive40i models sold here from 2020 are the same generation of car, with the same proportions and coupé roofline, though with the older pre-facelift dashboard rather than the Curved Display. The first owner has already absorbed the steepest part of the depreciation. That makes a pre-owned X6 the logical choice for buyers who want the look without the V8 running costs.

If you go that way, a few checks matter more than the asking price:

  • Service history. Ask for complete, stamped BMW dealer records and match the odometer readings across visits.
  • Remaining warranty or service package. Some owners bought BMW Service Inclusive or extended warranty cover. Confirm with an authorised BMW dealer whether any of it remains and whether it transfers to you.
  • Tyres and wheels. Large wheels on Indian roads pick up damage. Check every rim for bends and cracks and look at the tyre date codes.
  • An independent inspection. Have the car checked by an authorised BMW workshop or a trusted independent specialist before you pay.

Motozite lists new, demo and pre-owned luxury cars from sellers across India, so you can compare X6 listings by year, mileage and city in one place. The inspection and paperwork checks above are between you and the seller.

Verdict

The facelifted X6 M60i is no longer the style-led X5 alternative it used to be in India. It is a Rs 1.78 crore V8 performance coupé-SUV with a cabin to match and a rear seat that will annoy tall passengers. Judged on those terms, it is one of the most complete cars at its price, and the SQ8 is the only rival that matches it closely on price and pace. If you don’t need the V8, a well-documented pre-owned xDrive40i is where the smart money goes.

FAQs

What is the price of the BMW X6 in India?

The BMW X6 M60i xDrive is priced at Rs 1,77,90,000 ex-showroom in India, including GST. It is the only X6 variant on sale. Autocar India estimates the on-road price in Delhi at about Rs 2.07 crore once road tax, registration and insurance are added.

Is the six-cylinder BMW X6 xDrive40i still sold in India?

No. The facelifted X6 launched in June 2026 is sold only as the V8-powered M60i xDrive. The xDrive40i, with a 3.0-litre turbo six, was sold from 2020 and is now available only as a pre-owned car.

How fast is the BMW X6 M60i?

The X6 M60i uses a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 with 530hp and 750Nm. BMW claims 0-100kph in 4.3 seconds and a limited top speed of 250kph. In Autocar India’s test, the car reached 100kph in 4.11 seconds.

What is the mileage of the BMW X6 M60i?

The claimed fuel efficiency listed for the X6 M60i is 7.89 km/l. Expect less in city traffic or with enthusiastic driving. The fuel tank holds 83 litres.

BMW X6 or Audi SQ8: which should I buy?

Both are V8 coupé-SUVs priced at about Rs 1.78 crore ex-showroom. The SQ8 claims a quicker 0- 100 km/h time and slightly more torque, while the X6 has more power, rear-wheel steering, and a rear-biased all-wheel-drive setup. The right choice comes down to which one you prefer driving, so a back-to-back test drive is the best way to decide.

Is the BMW X6 practical for a family?

Only partly. The boot holds 580 litres, but the sloping roof limits tall loads, and the low rear seat leaves adults sitting knees-up on long trips. Families who regularly carry adults in the back will be better served by the BMW X5.
