The single most important thing to check on a used Lexus in India is the date it was first sold, because that decides how much factory warranty comes with it. Lexus cars sold before 2024 left the showroom with a 3-year, 100,000km vehicle warranty, which has almost certainly run out. Cars sold from 2024 carry 8 years and 160,000km, and Lexus says unexpired cover transfers to the next owner. The hybrid battery has its own rule: 8 years for cars sold from 1 August 2021, but only if every service, including Lexus’s Hybrid Care check, was done at an authorised Lexus workshop. Get those two dates right and a pre-owned ES 300h, NX or RX is one of the safest luxury buys in the country. Get them wrong, and you are buying a big hybrid with no safety net.
Which used Lexus models are on the market in India
Lexus started selling cars in India on 24 March 2017, so the used market is young and small. Three models make up almost all of it.
| Model | Years sold in India | Launch price (ex-showroom) | Built |
| ES 300h (6th gen) | 2017 to 2018 | Rs 55.27 lakh (March 2017) | Imported |
| ES 300h (7th gen) | Late 2018 to 2026 | Rs 59.13 lakh (Sept 2018); Rs 51.90 lakh to Rs 56.95 lakh once assembled locally (Feb 2020) | Imported until early 2020, then assembled at Toyota Kirloskar’s Bidadi plant |
| NX 300h | Early 2018 to 2022 | Rs 53.18 lakh to Rs 55.58 lakh (priced Dec 2017) | Imported |
| NX 350h | 2022 onwards | Rs 64.90 lakh to Rs 71.60 lakh (March 2022) | Imported |
| RX 450h | 2017 to 2023 | Rs 1.07 crore to Rs 1.10 crore (March 2017) | Imported |
| RX 450hL (7 seats) | Oct 2019 to 2023 | Rs 99 lakh (Oct 2019) | Imported |
| RX 350h / RX 500h | April 2023 onwards | Rs 95.80 lakh / Rs 1.18 crore | Imported |
Launch prices from Team-BHP (March 2017), Autocar India (Dec 2017), Autocar Professional (Sept 2018 and Jan 2020), evo India (Oct 2019, March 2022 and April 2023). Treat the “built” column for the NX and RX as our reading of these launch reports, all of which describe the cars as imported.
The ES has just been replaced. Lexus launched the electric ES 500e in March 2026 and the ES 350h hybrid on 30 August 2026, at Rs 66.10 lakh for the Exquisite and Rs 71.80 lakh for the Luxury, according to Autocar Professional and Rushlane. That makes every ES 300h a previous-generation car now. In our view, that is good news for used buyers: superseded models usually get easier to negotiate on, and the ES 300h’s hardware has had eight years to prove itself.
The warranty timeline every used Lexus buyer needs
Lexus has changed its warranty three times since 2021. Here is what a car carries depending on when it was first sold.
| First sold | Vehicle warranty | Hybrid battery warranty |
| March 2017 to July 2021 | 3 years / 100,000km | 5 years |
| August 2021 to early 2024 | 3 years / 100,000km | 8 years |
| 2024 to 31 March 2026 | 8 years / 160,000km | 8 years |
| From 1 April 2026 | 8 years / 200,000km | 8 years |

Two cautions. First, Lexus’s own documents disagree on the exact 2024 start date: its June 2024 release says cars sold from 1 June 2024, while its current warranty page lists cars sold from 2 April 2024. If the car you are looking at was sold between those two dates, ask a Lexus dealer to confirm its coverage from the VIN. Second, the kilometre cap on the battery warranty differs across Lexus documents (160,000km in the special additional warranty terms, 200,000km on the current warranty page). The figure printed in that car’s warranty booklet is the one that counts.
What this means in practice:
- A 2024 or 2025 car is the sweet spot. It can carry six or more years of transferable factory warranty. BMW’s and Mercedes-Benz’s standard warranties run two and three years, respectively, with longer coverage sold as paid extensions, so a used German car only matches this if the first owner paid for it.
- A late-2021 to early-2024 car is out of vehicle warranty unless the first owner extended it, but the battery may still be covered to 2029 or later.
- A pre-August-2021 car has neither. Price it as an out-of-warranty hybrid, and ask the seller what Lexus would charge to replace the battery, in writing, before you agree a number.
The condition that can void the battery warranty
Lexus’s battery cover only survives if the car has had scheduled maintenance with Hybrid Care at an authorised Lexus dealership throughout. The terms set the interval at one year or 10,000km in normal use, and six months or 5,000km in severe use. Missed or late services, non-genuine parts and work done at independent garages are all listed as exclusions. Lexus says the cover transfers to the next owner for whatever period is left, but it cannot be reinstated once broken.
So a three-year-old Lexus serviced at a cheaper independent garage to save money may have quietly lost the most valuable thing it had. Ask for the service history, then ask a Lexus dealer to confirm the car’s warranty status from its records. A stamped booklet alone is not enough.
Model by model: what to look for
Lexus ES 300h
This is the used Lexus you will find most often, and the one we would recommend first to most buyers. It is a big, quiet, front-wheel-drive hybrid sedan with a soft ride and an excellent rear seat.
The ground clearance problem. Team-BHP owners report the ES scraping on speed breakers and steep parking ramps, with one owner describing it touching three times at a single Mumbai mall. One long-term owner wrote that Lexus fitted longer springs to the later, locally assembled cars and that owners of earlier imported cars could retrofit them for around Rs 20,000. That is one owner’s account, not a Lexus statement, but it is worth asking a dealer about if you are looking at a 2018 or 2019 car.
Suspension and electrics at higher mileage. The same owner had a front shock absorber fail at about 57,000km, which showed up as a thud over bumps, and later needed a relay box and wiring harness he valued at about Rs 4 lakh to cure repeated startup error messages. He still called the car bulletproof apart from those two issues. Listen for thuds and check for warning messages on a cold start.
Which ES to buy. The October 2021 update brought a touchscreen moved more than 100mm closer to the driver, according to Lexus India, along with slimmer headlamps and a revised rear suspension brace for better ride and stability. Earlier cars relied on Lexus’s touchpad controller, which Team-BHP’s reviewers found hard to use on the move. Combine that with the August 2021 battery-warranty change and a late-2021 or newer ES 300h is the one we would hold out for.
Lexus NX 300h and NX 350h
The NX is the compact SUV, and there are two very different generations.
The NX 300h (2018 to 2022) is the cheaper entry point, but it has real compromises. Team-BHP’s review found a ride that feels stiff at low speeds, an infotainment touchpad that is hard to use on the move, a rear seat that suits two adults rather than three, and very limited boot space because of the hybrid battery and a full-size spare. Its plus points were 185mm of ground clearance (laden), a strong hybrid system and the Lexus reliability record. It is also old enough that its 5-year battery warranty has expired on almost every car.
The NX 350h (2022 onwards) is the better buy if the budget stretches. It has 241bhp, a 14-inch touchscreen, a head-up display and Lexus Safety System+, according to evo India’s launch report. Lexus added a rugged-themed Overtrail version in April 2024 at Rs 71.17 lakh. Any NX 350h sold from 2024 also carries the 8-year vehicle warranty.
Lexus RX 450h, RX 450hL and RX 350h
The RX is the rarest of the three in the used market. Motozite had no pre-owned RX listings when we checked on 22 October 2026, so be prepared to wait.
The older RX 450h uses a 3.5-litre V6 hybrid and launched at over Rs 1 crore in 2017. The RX 450hL stretched it to seven seats in 2019, but don’t buy it for the third row. Edmunds describes that row as suitable for small children only, with very little luggage room left behind it. If you genuinely need seven seats, a used Audi Q7 or Volvo XC90 does the job better. The current-generation RX 350h has been on sale only since April 2023, so used examples are few, but any car sold from 2024 brings the 8-year warranty. Our Lexus RX 350h review covers that car in detail.
Pre-owned Lexus inspection checklist
Use this alongside a full pre-purchase inspection. Our used luxury car inspection checklist covers the general points; these are the Lexus-specific ones.
- Confirm the first sale date and warranty status with a Lexus dealer, using the VIN. This tells you exactly what transfers to you.
- Ask for every Hybrid Care record. A gap or a non-Lexus service can mean no battery cover.
- Check the hybrid battery cooling system. A 2020 Lexus USA service bulletin (L-SB-0028-20) warned that dust and lint can clog the battery cooling fan and intake filter on hybrids including the 2013-2020 ES 300h, 2015-2020 NX 300h and RX 450h. It recommends inspecting the intake filter every 5,000 miles, roughly 8,000km. On a car that has lived in Delhi or Jaipur dust, ask when this was last cleaned.
- Run a diagnostic scan for hybrid-system and battery fault codes, and check that the car starts and moves off silently on battery power with the AC running.
- Look under the car. Scrapes on the front underbody and bumper lip are common on the ES. Serious damage suggests the car was driven hard over speed breakers.
- Listen to the suspension over rough roads for thuds or creaks.
- Check the tyres. One Team-BHP owner found his ES’s tyre size hard to source and paid about Rs 25,000 per tyre. Price a replacement set before you negotiate.
- Test every screen, camera and sensor. Infotainment was the most complaint-prone area in J.D. Power’s 2026 US dependability study.
Running costs and the Lexus Certified option
Lexus servicing is not cheap, but the figures owners report are reasonable for the class. On Team-BHP, an ES owner said a regular oil-change service can be done for under Rs 20,000 if you decline optional add-ons (December 2025), and the same owner’s 80,000km major service came to about Rs 68,000, covering consumables, radiator cleaning, AC service, brake fluid and wheel alignment (June 2023). These are one owner’s bills, so ask your nearest dealer for its own quote.
If you want a manufacturer-backed used car, Lexus India launched the Lexus Certified Programme in August 2022, with a 203-point inspection, a warranty of up to two years or 30,000km and up to three complimentary services, according to Autocar Professional. Check with your dealer whether the programme is still running and what it costs over a non-certified car. On a 2024 or newer car with years of factory warranty left, certification adds less. Our comparison of certified pre-owned programmes from BMW, Mercedes, Audi and Volvo shows how other brands do it.
Bear in mind that Lexus’s service network is small compared with the German brands. Find your nearest authorised workshop before you buy, because the battery warranty depends on using it.
What used Lexus cars are listed for
To give a sense of asking prices, these were among the eight pre-owned Lexus listings on Motozite’s pre-owned Lexus page on 22 October 2026. Listed prices exclude other charges and are what sellers are asking, not what cars sell for.
| Car | Registration year | Km | Owner | Asking price |
| ES 300h Exquisite | 2021 | 46,000 | Second | Rs 38 lakh |
| ES 300h Luxury | 2025 | 18,000 | First | Rs 59 lakh |
| NX 350h Luxury | 2023 | 48,000 | First | Rs 52 lakh |
| NX 350h Overtrail | 2025 | 20,000 | First | Rs 59 lakh |
Look at the two ES 300h listings. The 2025 car asks Rs 21 lakh more than the 2021 car. Part of that is four years and 28,000km. Part of it is that the 2025 car should carry factory warranty well into the 2030s, while the 2021 car’s vehicle warranty has ended. Work out how much warranty each car has left and put a rupee value on it before you compare prices. Our guide on how to negotiate the price of a pre-owned luxury car explains how to use evidence like this at the table.
Our verdict: which pre-owned Lexus to buy
- Best overall: a 2024 or newer ES 300h. You get the most refined version of the car, a touchscreen, a battery warranty and a transferable 8-year vehicle warranty, and the arrival of the ES 350h should soften asking prices.
- Best SUV: an NX 350h, ideally sold from 2024. Skip the NX 300h unless it is priced well below the 350h and you can live with the small boot.
- Best value if you accept risk: a late-2021 to 2023 ES 300h with a complete Lexus service history, because the battery should still be covered.
- Avoid: any pre-August-2021 car serviced outside Lexus, and the RX 450hL if seven seats are the reason you are buying it.
Lexus is the most dependable luxury brand on the reliability data we have looked at, as our post on the most reliable luxury car brands in India explains. A used one is only as safe as its paperwork, though. Check the dates first.
FAQ
Is a used Lexus a good buy in India?
Yes, if the paperwork checks out. Lexus has the strongest reliability record of any luxury brand in the major dependability surveys, and cars sold in India from 2024 carry an 8-year vehicle warranty that transfers to the next owner. The risks are a small service network and the cost of a hybrid battery on older cars whose battery warranty has ended.
Does the Lexus warranty transfer to a second owner in India?
Yes. Lexus India’s warranty page says an unexpired warranty can be transferred to subsequent owners within India. The hybrid battery cover also transfers for its remaining period, but only if the car has been serviced with Hybrid Care at authorised Lexus dealerships throughout.
How long is the Lexus hybrid battery warranty?
For Lexus cars sold in India from 1 August 2021, the hybrid battery warranty runs for 8 years. Cars sold before that date had a 5-year battery warranty, which has now expired on nearly all of them. The kilometre limit differs across Lexus documents, so check the car’s own warranty booklet.
Which used Lexus is best: ES, NX or RX?
For most buyers, the ES 300h is the best used Lexus, because it is the most common, the most comfortable, and the newest examples carry long warranties. Choose an NX 350h if you need an SUV. The RX is rare on the used market, and the seven-seat RX 450hL’s third row is only suitable for children.
What should I check before buying a used Lexus ES 300h?
Confirm the first sale date and warranty status with a Lexus dealer, check that every service, including Hybrid Care, was done at an authorised Lexus workshop, and inspect the underbody for scraping. Listen for suspension thuds, scan for hybrid fault codes, and ask when the battery cooling intake was last cleaned.
Is there a certified pre-owned Lexus programme in India?
Lexus India launched the Lexus Certified Programme in August 2022, with a 203-point inspection, a warranty of up to two years or 30,000 km, and up to three free services. Ask your nearest Lexus dealer whether it is still offered and on which cars.
