If you can stretch to about Rs 90 lakh on-road, the Mercedes-Benz GLC is the most complete midsize luxury SUV on sale in India right now: it has the biggest boot, the longest wheelbase and the most modern cabin of the four. The BMW X3 is the one to buy if you enjoy driving, but only in 30 xDrive form. The Volvo XC60 gives you the most equipment for the money in a single, fully loaded variant. The Audi Q5 is the cheapest at Rs 65.55 lakh ex-showroom and still the quickest petrol on paper, but it is an ageing car with a new generation on the way, so buy one only with a serious discount.
That is the short answer. The longer one depends on whether you drive yourself, whether you need a diesel, and how long you plan to keep the car. Here is how the four compare on price, specs, space, and ownership, with prices taken from Autocar India’s Delhi price listings in late October 2026.
Price in India: ex-showroom and on-road (Delhi)
| Model and variant | Fuel | Ex-showroom | On-road, Delhi (est.) |
| Audi Q5 45 TFSI Premium Plus | Petrol | Rs 65.55 lakh | Rs 76.37 lakh |
| Audi Q5 45 TFSI Technology | Petrol | Rs 70.73 lakh | Rs 82.41 lakh |
| BMW X3 xDrive20 M Sport | Petrol | Rs 69.90 lakh | Rs 81.44 lakh |
| BMW X3 xDrive30 M Sport Pro | Petrol mild hybrid | Rs 76.90 lakh | Rs 89.59 lakh |
| BMW X3 xDrive20d M Sport | Diesel | Rs 78.20 lakh | Rs 93.06 lakh |
| Mercedes-Benz GLC 300 4MATIC | Petrol mild hybrid | Rs 77.00 lakh | Rs 89.71 lakh |
| Mercedes-Benz GLC 220d 4MATIC | Diesel mild hybrid | Rs 77.00 lakh | Rs 91.64 lakh |
| Volvo XC60 B5 Ultra | Petrol mild hybrid | Rs 70.90 lakh | Rs 82.60 lakh |

Treat these as a snapshot, not a quote. Luxury car prices in India have moved several times since GST 2.0 cut the tax on large cars to a flat 40 percent in September 2025. BMW India has announced four price increases in 2026 alone, the latest of up to 4 percent from October, citing a weaker rupee and higher input costs. Mercedes-Benz raised prices by up to 2 percent from 1 January, and Volvo by up to Rs 1 lakh from 1 May. Ask the dealer for a written ex-showroom figure on the day you book.
Two things stand out in that table.
The GLC petrol and diesel cost the same ex-showroom, but not on the road. Both are listed at Rs 77 lakh. In Delhi, though, diesel cars attract 12.5 percent road tax against 10 percent for petrol, so the GLC 220d ends up about Rs 1.9 lakh dearer on-road. Check your own state’s rates before you assume the diesel is free.
The X3 30 xDrive is Rs 10,000 cheaper than the GLC 300. They have identical outputs, 258hp and 400Nm, and both use a 48V mild-hybrid petrol engine. On price and power, this is the closest head-to-head in the segment.

All four are all-wheel drive as standard, which is unusual at this price and worth knowing if you are cross-shopping a two-wheel-drive rival. If you want to know how the four systems differ, our explainer on Quattro vs xDrive vs 4MATIC covers it.
Mercedes-Benz GLC: the most complete package
Price: Rs 77 lakh ex-showroom, petrol or diesel.
The GLC is the one that asks the fewest compromises. It has the largest boot here at 620 litres and the longest wheelbase at 2,888mm, and it is assembled at Mercedes-Benz’s plant in Chakan, near Pune. In April 2026, Autocar India called the GLC 300 the most complete choice of the X3, Q5 and GLC for daily use and long trips, pointing to its ride on bad roads, its smooth, quiet petrol engine and an interior it rated the most modern and upmarket of the three. Mercedes’ service network, which reaches well beyond the metros, was part of that case too.
The weaknesses are small but real. Autocar India’s review lists fiddly touch-sensitive controls among its dislikes, and the GLC is the most expensive way into this segment because there is no cheaper entry variant. You either spend Rs 77 lakh or you don’t buy one.
Our view: the GLC is the right default for a family that drives a lot on mixed roads and wants the car to feel expensive every day. If you cover big highway distances, the 220d’s 440Nm and 19.47kpl claim make it the smarter pick, even with the higher road tax in states like Delhi.
BMW X3: buy it for the drive, and buy the right engine
Price: Rs 69.90 lakh to Rs 78.20 lakh ex-showroom.
The current X3 is the newest design of the four. It arrived in India in January 2025, built at BMW’s Chennai plant, and it is the longest, widest and tallest car in this group. Its 570-litre boot comes with a separate spare-wheel compartment, and the equipment list is generous across the range: a 14.9-inch touchscreen, a head-up display, a 360-degree camera, a panoramic glass roof, a Harman Kardon system and driver assistance features, according to Autocar India.
The catch is the entry engine. The xDrive20 makes 190hp and 310Nm, and Autocar India’s review lists “engine needs more power” among its dislikes. At 7.8 seconds to 100 km/h, it is the slowest petrol car here by a clear margin.
That is why the X3 30 xDrive M Sport Pro, added in February 2026, matters. It gets 258hp and 400Nm, matching the GLC 300, and Autocar India recorded 0-100kph in 6.11 seconds in preliminary testing, more than 1.5 seconds quicker than the xDrive20. It also gets darker exterior trim, 20-inch wheels and red brake calipers.
Our view: skip the xDrive20. The 30 xDrive costs Rs 7 lakh more ex-showroom and transforms the car, and it is the X3 that justifies BMW’s reputation. The 20d remains the long-distance option, with the best claimed efficiency of the BMW range at 17.86kpl, though it is the most expensive X3 on the road.
Volvo XC60: the most equipment for the money
Price: Rs 70.90 lakh ex-showroom, single variant.
Volvo keeps things simple. There is one XC60, the B5 Ultra, with a 250hp mild-hybrid petrol engine and all-wheel drive, and almost everything comes as standard. Volvo India’s website lists a panoramic roof, a Bowers & Wilkins audio system, Google built-in, and a powered tailgate, and Autocar India adds massaging front seats in Nappa leather and the Pilot Assist driver-assistance suite. The XC60 was facelifted in India in August 2025.
The compromise is space at the back. At 483 litres, its boot is the smallest here, and 137 litres down on the GLC. Volvo’s 12.9kpl claim is also the lowest of the petrol cars.
Our view: the XC60 makes the most sense for a buyer who wants a calm, safe, well-equipped SUV and doesn’t want to spend an hour in an options list. At Rs 70.90 lakh, it is about Rs 6 lakh cheaper than a comparably powerful GLC 300 or X3 30. It is also a good fit for taller drivers. In our comparison of luxury SUVs for tall drivers, the XC60 had the most front legroom of the eight we measured.
Audi Q5: still quick, but the clock is running
Price: Rs 65.55 lakh to Rs 70.73 lakh ex-showroom.
On paper, the Q5 is the bargain. It is the cheapest car here, and its 249hp 2.0 TFSI with quattro and a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox gets it to 100kph in 6.1 seconds, the quickest petrol figure of the four. Autocar India describes it as a comfortable SUV that is pleasant to drive and good value.
The problem is age. The current Q5 arrived in India in 2018 and was facelifted in 2021, and Autocar India notes it feels less modern than the GLC and X3. A new-generation Q5 was revealed globally in September 2024. Autocar India expects the Indian version to be petrol only, with a 2.0-litre mild-hybrid engine making 204hp and 340Nm, and prices starting around Rs 70 lakh. Audi India has not announced a launch date.
Notice that number. The next Q5 is expected to make less power than the one on sale today. What it adds is a newer cabin and a stronger 48V mild-hybrid system that can run on electric power alone at light throttle.
Our view: a new Q5 today is a reasonable buy only if the dealer’s discount reflects that a replacement is coming, because the outgoing model will lose value faster once it arrives. For buyers who prioritise performance per rupee, a well-kept pre-owned Q5 is arguably the better value play.
Petrol or diesel?
Only BMW and Mercedes still offer a diesel here, with the X3 20d and GLC 220d. Audi and Volvo are petrol-only, and Autocar India expects the next Q5 to stay that way.
Our rule of thumb: diesel earns its keep if you regularly cover long highway distances, say well over 1,500km a month. For mostly city use, the petrol mild hybrids are smoother and quieter, and in some states, Delhi among them, they are cheaper to register. There, the 2.5-percentage-point gap in road tax adds about Rs 1.9 lakh to a Rs 77 lakh diesel. Check your own state’s rates before deciding.
Buying one pre-owned
Everything above applies to used examples too. A few extra checks are worth making:
- Mercedes GLC petrol: Mercedes-Benz India recalled petrol GLCs built between October 2022 and February 2025 to fix a fuel delivery module, according to Autocar India. Ask the seller for proof that the recall work was done at an authorised workshop.
- Audi Q5: expect used prices to soften once the new generation launches. That is bad news for current owners and good news for buyers who can wait.
- Volvo XC60: our pre-owned Volvo XC60 and XC90 buying guide covers which model years to target.
- All four: check whether a service package or extended warranty transfers to you. Each brand runs its own certified pre-owned programme, and the terms differ.
