Pre-Owned Range Rover and Defender in India: Which Year to Buy, Common Issues and Real Running Costs

A used Range Rover or Defender is only a bargain if you price it against what the same car costs new today, and in India that number has moved a lot. Local assembly cut the Range Rover by up to Rs 56 lakh and the Range Rover Sport by Rs 29 lakh in 2024, GST 2.0 took off up to Rs 30.4 lakh more across the range in September 2025, and the Defender may be next. So the short answer: buy a 2022-onward Range Rover or Range Rover Sport, or a 2021-onward Defender, with full dealer history and some warranty left, and be very wary of anything older unless you have a specialist and a repair fund.

This guide covers which years to target, what each generation cost new, what Indian owners have actually run into, and what to check before you pay.

Why new-car prices decide used Range Rover and Defender values

Most used luxury cars depreciate from a fixed reference point. Land Rover’s reference point keeps moving.

EventWhat changed
May 2024: Range Rover assembled at JLR’s Pune plant3.0 diesel HSE LWB fell Rs 44 lakh to Rs 2.36 crore; 3.0 petrol Autobiography LWB fell Rs 56 lakh to Rs 2.60 crore
Aug 2024: Range Rover Sport locally assembled cars delivered3.0 petrol and diesel Dynamic SE fell Rs 29 lakh to Rs 1.40 crore
Sep 2025: GST 2.0JLR cut prices by Rs 4.5 lakh to Rs 30.4 lakh across Range Rover, Defender and Discovery
May 2026: ahead of the India-UK trade dealUK-built Range Rover SV cut by Rs 75 lakh, Range Rover Sport SV Edition Two by Rs 40 lakh

What this means for you: a 2022 or 2023 Range Rover Sport was an imported car bought at roughly Rs 1.64 crore and up. A new locally assembled one now starts at Rs 1.43 crore. If a seller is pricing his car as “only two years old, so 75 percent of what I paid”, he is anchoring to a list price that no longer exists. Do the maths from today’s ex-showroom price, then deduct for age, kilometres and warranty left.

The Defender wildcard. Every Defender sold in India so far has been imported fully built from JLR’s Slovakia plant. JLR’s CFO said in May 2025 that plans were in process to assemble it locally, as reported by Team-BHP citing Mint, and Autocar India reported in July 2025 that local production was being considered but was still some time away. As of mid-October 2026 there was no official India assembly announcement. If it does happen, and the Range Rover precedent holds, new Defender prices could fall sharply, and used imported Defenders would follow. That is a real risk if you plan to sell within two or three years. Because the Defender is built in Slovakia, the India-UK trade deal does not help it, according to Autocar India.

Used Range Rover: buy the current generation or budget like a fleet manager

What you’ll find: the previous generation, which dominates older listings, and the current generation from 2022. Early current-gen cars were imported, with a wide spread of trims including long-wheelbase and seven-seat versions. From May 2024 the 3.0 petrol and diesel long-wheelbase cars were assembled in Pune, while the V8 and short-wheelbase versions stayed imported.

Our take: the current-generation Range Rover is the one to buy used, and a locally assembled 2024-onward car is the cleanest purchase because its original invoice is close to today’s price, so there is less inflated “I paid Rs 3 crore” pricing to argue down. A 2022 or 2023 import can be the better deal, but only if the asking price reflects the cut.

The older generation is cheap to buy and expensive to own. In a 2021 Team-BHP thread on buying a used Range Rover, Vogue or Sport, members’ running-cost estimates ranged from about Rs 1 lakh a year with an independent garage to Rs 2 to 3 lakh, with one member warning that a major drivetrain failure could cost Rs 15 to 20 lakh. One owner of a 2012 Vogue was quoted about Rs 70,000 to 80,000 to replace an infotainment module, with a three-month wait for the part. Another described waits of months for basic parts such as bumpers and lights on an older Range Rover Sport.

Ownership is not trouble-free even on new cars. Team-BHP reported in April 2026 on a 2023 Range Rover SV Autobiography LWB with under 20,000km that had suffered suspension failure, engine-management module faults, fuel vapour in the cabin and jamming doors. By the owner’s account the car spent up to four months at a time at the service centre waiting for parts from the UK, and he filed a consumer case in September 2025. One owner’s case, but it tells you what to ask the dealer about parts lead times.

Used Range Rover Sport: the sweet spot, if your budget allows

What you’ll find: the previous-generation Sport in large numbers, and the current car from mid-2022, including some P400e plug-in hybrids.

Our take: of the three, a current-generation Range Rover Sport is the one we would buy. It drives better than the Range Rover, it is easier to park, and it gives you the same 3.0 six-cylinder engines. The catch is budget. In an August 2025 Team-BHP discussion, a senior member put it plainly: under Rs 1 crore, you only get the previous-generation car. That matches the maths above.

What Indian owners have reported:

  • A Range Rover Sport P400e owner on Team-BHP (April 2026) traced a “Suspension Height Fault” message to damaged wiring on a front height sensor. We cover the system in detail in our air suspension problems guide.
  • A used Range Rover Sport PHEV owner on Team-BHP (August 2025) had the high-voltage coolant heater replaced under warranty, and noted it was expensive. On a plug-in hybrid, check that any such repair is documented.
  • In the same thread, a buyer planned to spend about Rs 2.5 to 3 lakh on an extended warranty for a 2022 or 2023 car. That is one buyer’s estimate, not a price list, but it is a useful figure to have in your head when you ask the dealer.

Used Defender: the easiest Land Rover to buy right now, with one big caveat

What you’ll find: 2021-onward Defender 110s in most listings, fewer 90s, and a smaller number of 130s and V8s. Early cars are the 2.0 petrol; the 3.0 six-cylinder diesel arrived in March 2021.

Our take: a 2021 to 2023 Defender 110 with full dealer history is the most straightforward pre-owned Land Rover purchase in India today. It is young, it has fewer luxury systems to go wrong than a Range Rover, and demand is strong. Autocar India reported that the Defender was JLR’s best-selling model in India in FY2025.

Petrol or diesel? For city-heavy use, especially in Delhi NCR, the 2.0 petrol. It avoids diesel emissions hardware and the 10-year registration limit. A Team-BHP owner reported 8.4kmpl tank-to-tank on a mostly highway run in a 2.0 petrol 110, which is about what you should expect from a big, square, all-wheel-drive SUV. The diesel makes far more sense if you do long distances and live outside the NCR.

What Indian owners have reported: forum data on the new Defender is still thin, which is itself a sign it has not thrown up widespread major faults in India. What has come up:

  • Team-BHP’s March 2025 ownership review of a 2.0 petrol 110 X-Dynamic HSE found the gearbox “gets confused” in city traffic, called the third-row seats a joke, and noticed the car lacked blind-spot detection, which the reviewer suspected was a model-year feature deletion. Check that the features in the listing match the car.
  • A Defender 90 owner reported in August 2024 that a front passenger seat motor had failed and the part had been on order for more than two weeks.

Our view on the local-assembly risk: if you are buying a Defender to keep for five years or more, it barely matters. If you might sell within two or three years, negotiate as though a cheaper locally assembled Defender could arrive in that time, because nobody outside JLR can rule it out.

Diesel Range Rovers and Defenders in Delhi NCR

Delhi began deregistering diesel vehicles older than 10 years from 1 January 2022, following National Green Tribunal directions, with NOCs issued for re-registration elsewhere. A 2017 diesel Range Rover on a Delhi registration has about a year left in the city. Price that in, or buy a petrol.

Warranty: what transfers and what to ask

Land Rover India’s standard warranty is 3 years or 1,00,000km, whichever comes first, with roadside assistance for the same period. Plug-in hybrid traction batteries are covered for 6 years or 1,00,000km. The brand also sells extended warranty, but its India page says cover is market-dependent and does not say whether it transfers to a second owner.

Before you pay:

  1. Ask an authorised Land Rover retailer to check the VIN for remaining factory warranty, any extended warranty bought, and whether it transfers to you.
  2. Ask for any open recalls and software updates to be completed and confirmed in writing.
  3. Ask the workshop how long typical parts take to arrive. On these cars, the wait can cost you more than the repair.

Pre-purchase checklist for a used Range Rover or Defender

  • Full diagnostic scan at an authorised workshop, including stored and cleared fault codes. Electrical modules are where many recent Indian complaints sit.
  • Air suspension: see the car after an overnight park, measure all four corners, and cycle every height setting.
  • Every electrical function: keyless entry from all doors, soft-close doors, cameras, seat motors, climate, infotainment. Test them before the deal, not after.
  • 12V battery health. Low voltage can trigger unrelated warnings on modern JLR cars.
  • Service history at a Land Rover workshop, with invoices, not just stamps.
  • Variant check: match the RC, VIN and invoice to the listing. Feature content has changed between model years.
  • For plug-in hybrids: battery health report and records of any high-voltage repairs.

Which one should you buy?

  • Best all-rounder: a 2022-onward Range Rover Sport, ideally a locally assembled 2024-onward car with warranty left.
  • Easiest ownership right now: a 2021 to 2023 Defender 110 petrol with dealer history, bought at a price that allows for a possible new-price cut.
  • Maximum luxury: a 2024-onward locally assembled Range Rover LWB, priced against today’s Rs 2.40 crore starting point.
  • Older Range Rovers and Sports: only with an independent inspection, a specialist you trust, and Rs 2 to 3 lakh a year set aside, which is in line with what Team-BHP members have budgeted. The low asking price is real. So are the parts waits.

FAQ

Which year of used Range Rover should I buy in India?

Buy the current generation, sold in India from 2022. A locally assembled car from May 2024 onwards is the simplest buy, because its original price is close to today’s new price of Rs 2.40 crore and up. Older-generation Range Rovers are much cheaper to buy, but Team-BHP members typically budget Rs 2 to 3 lakh a year for running costs and report long waits for parts.

Is a used Land Rover Defender a good buy in India?

A 2021 to 2023 Defender 110 with full dealer history is one of the more straightforward pre-owned luxury SUV purchases, because the model is young and in demand. The main risk is price: JLR has said it is considering local assembly, and if that happens new prices could fall, pulling used values down with them. Negotiate with that in mind if you plan to sell within a few years.

Why are used Range Rover prices falling in India?

Because new prices fell. Local assembly cut the Range Rover by up to Rs 56 lakh and the Range Rover Sport by Rs 29 lakh in 2024, and GST 2.0 brought further cuts of up to Rs 30.4 lakh across JLR’s range in September 2025. Used cars are priced against today’s new price, not the price the first owner paid.

What are the common problems with used Range Rovers and Defenders?

Recent Indian owner reports centre on electrical and module faults, air suspension height sensors and wiring, and long waits for imported parts. On older Range Rovers, owners report higher running costs and parts delays of weeks or months. On the Defender, reported issues have been comparatively minor, such as a seat motor failure and hesitant gearbox behaviour in city traffic.

Does the Land Rover warranty transfer to a second owner in India?

Land Rover India’s standard warranty runs for 3 years or 1,00,000km from first purchase, and its India page does not say whether extended warranty transfers. Ask an authorised Land Rover retailer to check the car’s VIN for remaining factory warranty, any extended cover bought and whether it moves to you.

Should I buy a diesel or petrol used Defender?

Buy the petrol if you live in Delhi NCR or mostly drive in the city, because Delhi deregisters diesel vehicles older than 10 years. The 3.0 diesel suits long highway distances outside the NCR. The 2.0 petrol is thirstier, with one Team-BHP owner reporting 8.4kmpl on a mostly highway run.
